Accordingly, the first AI chip designed by OpenAI, expected to be manufactured at TSMC on a 3nm process, has nearly completed its design and will be sent for trial production in the next few months.
OpenAI aims to mass-produce AI chips by 2026. The process of sending a design through a factory will cost tens of millions of dollars and take about six months to complete. If it fails, OpenAI will have to check for errors and repeat the process.
If the submission is successful, OpenAI could begin testing its alternative to Nvidia chips later this year. Tech experts say OpenAI has made rapid progress, a process that would have taken years for other chip designers.
TSMC will manufacture the chip using a 3nm process, using a popular systolic matrix architecture with high-bandwidth memory, which is also used by Nvidia. OpenAI's chip, while capable of both training and running models, is said to be deployed and has a limited role in the company's infrastructure.
