Trump: The conflict in Syria has nothing to do with the US

VTC NewsVTC News08/12/2024

On December 7, in a statement on the social network Truth Social, US President-elect Donald Trump said that Syria is in chaos but this country is not a friend of the United States.

"The United States should not do anything regarding the situation in Syria. This is not our war," Mr. Trump posted on the social network Truth Social.

Mr. Trump also said that if the rebels could force Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to give up power, that would be the best thing for Russia. The US president-elect commented that Moscow was focusing its resources on Ukraine and could not turn to support the Damascus government.

Repeating his “America First” stance, Mr. Trump argued that the Syrian conflict is not America’s war.

The message was posted by Mr. Trump ahead of his meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron. The US President-elect is in Paris to attend the inauguration of Notre Dame Cathedral, marking his first return to international politics since the end of his first term.

Since launching their offensive last week, the rebel group Hay'et Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and its allies have taken control of Aleppo, the country's second-largest city, and Hama, the fourth-largest. This is the first time the Assad regime has lost Aleppo and Hama since the beginning of the civil war.

The Syrian Defense Ministry denied reports that troops had withdrawn from positions near Damascus. However, videos on social media showed army units retreating toward Damascus from the suburbs.

The developments in Syria have surprised Arab countries and raised concerns about a new wave of instability in the region. Western countries believe that the Syrian army is in a difficult situation, unable to stop the rebels and forced to continuously retreat.

The foreign ministers of Russia, Iran and Türkiye met today in the Qatari capital Doha to discuss the situation in Syria. The UN special envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, called for restraint from all sides.
