Kremlin warns of UK plans to send troops to Ukraine

(CLO) The Kremlin has said any UK plans to deploy troops to Ukraine as part of a peacekeeping mission would be unacceptable to Russia.

Responding to the UK's plan, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the proposal was unacceptable, as it involved the forces of a NATO member state and could threaten Russia's security.

"This worries us, because we are talking about the eventual possibility of deploying military forces from NATO countries to Ukraine," Peskov said at a press conference on Thursday. "From our security point of view, this is a completely different development and we are watching it very closely."

Earlier, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he was "ready and willing" to send British troops to Ukraine to ensure security, in case a ceasefire agreement between Moscow and Kiev is established.

Mr Starmer plans to present US President Donald Trump with a proposal to send fewer than 30,000 European troops to Ukraine, in return for Washington guaranteeing their protection.

Russia stressed that it was closely following the British Prime Minister's statements with concern.

Russia has repeatedly warned against the presence of NATO troops on Ukrainian territory. Earlier this week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that if NATO deployed troops to Ukraine, even under a different flag, Moscow would still consider it a “direct threat” to Russia’s sovereignty.

In talks with the United States in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, Russia demanded that NATO withdraw its 2008 commitment to one day admit Ukraine as a member. Moscow also rejected the idea that NATO forces could play a peacekeeping role as part of a ceasefire agreement between the two sides.
