According to The Verge , in the new test version of Windows 11 on the Canary channel, Microsoft has added a character count feature at the bottom of Notepad similar to the word count feature in Microsoft Word documents.
“When text is selected, the status bar displays the character count for both the selected text and the entire document. If no text is selected, the character count for the entire document is displayed, ensuring users always have a clear view of the length of their document,” Microsoft’s Windows Insider team explained in a blog post.
This is the latest in a series of changes to Notepad this year. The app recently received a new autosave option that lets users close it without seeing a save prompt pop up every time. Microsoft has also added tabs to Notepad, as well as a Dark Mode.
Along with the Notepad changes in this latest Windows 11 beta, Windows 11's widgets are also getting some improvements. Users will soon be able to show only widgets and hide the news feed and articles that appear inside the widgets screen. This is a very welcome feature because it is often filled with low-quality articles and junk that many people don't want to see inside a built-in Windows feature.
As always, these features are in testing, and it's possible that Microsoft will make some changes before officially rolling them out to all Windows 11 users, expected in early 2024.
