Tan Ky farmers strongly mechanize sugarcane growing, profits continuously increase

Mr. Nguyen Huu Long's family in Hamlet 10, Nghia Dong Commune is one of the households renting new sugarcane planting machines on the fields along the Con River. Mr. Long said that his family has rented land to plant sugarcane with an area of ​​5 hectares for many years. Last sugarcane crop, although it was the third crop, the yield still reached 100 tons/ha. After harvesting, the family rented a machine to prepare the land and process all the old sugarcane stumps. Now that the weather is suitable, the family has prepared enough LK9211 sugarcane seeds and rented a machine to plant again.

Mr. Long calculated that to plant 1 hectare of sugarcane, the initial investment is about 50 million VND, including: 10 tons of sugarcane seeds 11 million VND, renting a planting machine 2.2 million VND; 1 ton of NPK fertilizer nearly 8 million VND, along with other expenses: pesticides, rental of harvesting machines... However, from the 2nd and 3rd crops, the cost is significantly reduced, because there is no need to spend money on seeds and land preparation.

“ Using a 3-pan plow, 30cm deep, sugarcane is planted in double rows, 1.2m apart. Planting sugarcane with a machine not only shortens the time, but also facilitates later care, the sugarcane is less likely to fall and break, achieving high productivity. The current price of sugarcane purchased by Song Con Sugarcane Joint Stock Company is 1.1 million VND/ton. Having been attached to sugarcane for 10 years now, this is the main source of income for my family,” Mr. Long shared.

Mr. Truong Van Minh's family in Trung Luong hamlet, Tan Xuan commune has been attached to sugarcane for decades. Currently, the family has more than 1 hectare of sugarcane in the hillside area. At this time, he has finished harvesting the second year of sugarcane, and is plowing the roots to fertilize and care for them. In recent years, his family has brought machinery into production from land preparation, planting, and later care and harvesting by machine to reduce labor.

Mr. Minh said: "During the harvest and planting season, hiring manual labor is also difficult and expensive. Therefore, hiring machines from the land preparation stage is quick, plowing deeply to loosen the soil, helping the planting and the plants to grow smoothly. The products are purchased by a local factory, the price is reasonable, so the family is assured to stick with growing sugarcane."

Productivity is higher year after year

Accompanying sugarcane growers, Song Con Sugarcane Joint Stock Company in recent years has had many policies and mechanisms to support sugarcane growers as well as to purchase agricultural products, thanks to which farmers have the conditions to stick with raw sugarcane.

Mr. Nguyen Ba Quy - Deputy Director of Song Con Sugarcane Joint Stock Company said: Along with previous support policies for loans to buy sugarcane seeds and sugarcane sludge, every year the company supplies land preparation machines, pesticide sprayers, harvesters, etc. Therefore, sugarcane grows stably, has few pests and diseases, sugarcane yield is higher year after year, in the 2024 - 2025 sugarcane crop, the average sugarcane yield reaches over 60 tons/ha.

This year, right from the beginning of the sugarcane harvest season as well as the planting season 2025-2026, the Company has coordinated to provide sugarcane harvesters as well as sugarcane planting machines to people in Tan Ky district to help people see the effectiveness of shortening the harvest time as well as reducing production costs. Especially for areas with roots from the 3rd year or more, it is convenient to harvest quickly so that they can be cleared in time to make way for replanting.

"Encouraging mechanization in production is the right policy. Localities need to further promote land consolidation, land accumulation, and the creation of concentrated sugarcane fields," said Mr. Nguyen Ba Quy.

Tan Ky district currently has over 5,000 hectares of raw sugarcane, of which over 1,000 hectares are concentrated in large-scale fields that are convenient for machinery production, giving superior productivity compared to other areas. Sugarcane productivity in concentrated fields reaches 80 - 90 tons/ha or more.

The company has introduced policies to support sugarcane growers in previous years, so the company's raw material area is increasing. In the 2024-2025 sugarcane crop, the raw material area of ​​Song Con Sugarcane Joint Stock Company with a total sugarcane area of ​​6,150 hectares, the sugarcane output brought to the factory is estimated at 370,000 tons.

In the 2025-2026 crop year, the Company's raw material area will continue to be stable at over 6,000 hectares, striving for a sugarcane output of 380,000 tons to the factory. The company's key sugarcane areas: Hoan Long, Giai Xuan, Nghia Dong... are planted in concentrated areas, cared for according to technical processes, achieving annual yields of over 100 tons/ha, with some areas reaching over 120 tons/ha. The cost of planting sugarcane in the first crop is about 50%, and in the second and third crops, about 1/3.

It can be affirmed that the sugarcane material area of ​​Song Con Sugarcane Joint Stock Company is always stable, thanks to the great contribution of sugarcane growers in Tan Ky, Yen Thanh, Do Luong, Thanh Chuong districts... and the support of local authorities at all levels.

Song Con Sugarcane Joint Stock Company plans to finish the pressing season in the second half of April. In the 2025-2026 sugarcane crop, the raw material area in Tan Ky district will be newly planted on 1,600 hectares, the remaining 3,000 hectares will be old sugarcane. The two main sugarcane varieties planted in the raw material area are LK9211 and KK3.
