Compared to other species, red tilapia raised in Bac Kan according to VietGAP standards has many outstanding advantages such as being less susceptible to common diseases and can be raised intensively at a high density of 100 fish/m3 of cages.

Raising red tilapia according to VietGAP standards is still quite new to fish farmers in Bac Kan province. In 2024, the Bac Kan Provincial Agricultural Extension Center coordinated with the Aquaculture Research Institute I to implement a model of raising red tilapia on rivers/lakes with VietGAP certification at Phieng Bang reservoir, Van Lang commune, Na Ri district, Bac Kan province.

The model belongs to the project "Building a model of raising red tilapia on rivers/lakes to achieve VietGAP certification" in the period of 2022-2024 from the support fund of the National Agricultural Extension Center with a scale of 225m3 cages, 02 households participating in the model.

Delegates visited the red tilapia farming model on the reservoir at Mr. Luong Van Hien's household - Van Lang commune, Na Ri district, Bac Kan province.

Tilapia is also known as red tilapia (Oreochromis spp). Compared to other species, tilapia has many outstanding advantages such as being less susceptible to common diseases and can be intensively farmed at high density of 100 fish/ m3 in cages.

With the State mechanism supporting 55% of the cost of seeds, 50% of industrial feed, lime, biological products, probiotics...; 55% of hiring units to inspect, evaluate and certify VietGAP according to technical processes and 100% of the cost of technical training, organizing workshops to summarize the model with the participation of the people. Farmers contribute labor and reciprocate the rest.

With 22,500 fish fry initially released, after 6 months of raising, the survival rate reached over 80%, the fish grew quickly, reaching an average weight of 0.6 - 0.72 kg/fish, the estimated output reached nearly 11.7 tons. After deducting costs: fry, food, medicine, care and protection, ... the farmer earned a profit of about 100 million VND/ 225m3 , on average 1m3 earned: 450,000 VND.

As a household selected to implement the model, Mr. Luong Van Hien shared that when implementing the model, he attended training courses before releasing the seeds. Through the training courses, he better understood the techniques of selecting seeds, releasing seeds, caring for and managing, hanging lime bags, preventing diseases using vitamin C, enzymes during the farming period, and keeping diary books...

Over time, tilapia grow rapidly, are suitable for local conditions and are highly effective. However, the consumption of tilapia needs to be linked between households around the cage fish farming area.

Mr. Trieu Duc Thong - Deputy Director of the Agricultural Extension Center of Bac Kan province said: Raising red tilapia in cages on rivers/reservoirs has been effectively implemented by people, typically in Song Nang, Thuong Giao commune, Ba Be district and some reservoirs in Na Ri district.

The implementation of the tilapia farming model on rivers/lakes with VietGAP certification from the National Agricultural Extension Center has contributed to raising people's awareness of the formation of cage fish farming, opening up a new business direction, providing stable income.

The model has low risks and few diseases. In the coming time, the Center will continue to promote cage fish farming households to continue to maintain and expand to increase product value associated with sustainable aquaculture development, increasing people's income. Thereby, creating a connection associated with product consumption will be more convenient.

The model of raising red tilapia on rivers/lakes with VietGAP certification shows high economic value and needs to be expanded in production in the coming time. Applying the VietGAP farming process in aquaculture contributes to changing farmers' awareness of how to invest, care for, manage the pond environment, prevent fish diseases, improve product quality and facilitate output. This is also a solution for sustainable aquaculture development in Bac Kan.
