According to the Kon Tum Department of Education and Training, Kon Tum province has 918 satellite schools. In the 2024-2025 school year, 717 satellite schools will be in use and 201 satellite schools will not be in operation.
Of these, Dak Glei district has up to 50 schools that are no longer in use after the merger. Many facilities have been abandoned for many years, leading to deterioration, damage, or ineffective management and use, causing waste of public assets.
The school in Dak Sao commune is abandoned and wasteful.
To overcome this, the Dak Glei District Education and Training Department has reviewed and advised the District People's Committee to consider converting the functions of unused remote schools into community cultural activity centers or transferring them to kindergartens. However, the conversion of functions is facing difficulties in legal procedures, many schools have degraded and are not suitable for their functions and purposes.
In Tu Mo Rong district, there are also many redundant and abandoned schools after the merger. Of which, Kach Lon 2 school belongs to Dak Sao commune primary and secondary boarding school for ethnic minorities, which was put into operation in 2021 to serve students from Kach Lon 1 and Kach Lon 2 villages. At the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year, Kach Lon 2 school was officially merged into Dak Sao commune central school.
An abandoned school in Tu Mo Rong commune, Tu Mo Rong district, overgrown with weeds.
Since then, due to the lack of caretakers and security guards, Kach Lon 2 School has become desolate. Weeds have grown all over the grounds, concrete fence posts have broken and fallen. Many glass doors have been broken, and the classrooms have a strong stench.
Ms. Y Thung (38 years old, living in Kach Lon 2 village, Dak Sao commune, Tu Mo Rong district) said that after the school was no longer in use, many young people caused trouble, throwing rocks at the windows, causing damage. After only a few months of abandonment, the school became desolate, no one dared to enter.
According to Mr. Pham Quoc Viet, Principal of Dak Sao Commune Boarding Primary and Secondary School, after receiving the policy of eliminating the school from the Department of Education and Training of Kon Tum province, the school merged two classes 1 and 2 with about 30 students from Kach Lon 2 school and moved to the main school in the commune center. Therefore, in the past few months, this place has been redundant and no longer in use.
Due to being abandoned for too long, the facilities are seriously degraded.
According to the Department of Education and Training of Kon Tum province, there are still many remote schools that are no longer used for teaching in villages and hamlets, but there is no plan for their use and handover to promote the invested facilities. Some remote schools have expired and are in disrepair but have not been dismantled. Some schools are currently in use but are not solid, lacking playgrounds, equipment, clean water and sanitation facilities, and fences.
According to Ms. Pham Thi Trung, Director of the Department of Education and Training of Kon Tum province, in the coming time, the People's Committees of districts and cities will continue to review the current status of the school network in conjunction with the local socio-economic development plans. On that basis, there will be plans to use and handle facilities for each specific branch school.
For out-of-date and degraded schools, they need to be dismantled to ensure safety and give priority to supplementing the public land fund of residential areas. For schools that are still in their term and safe, there should be an effective use plan. Arrange the school as a place for activities of residential groups, villages, community cultural activities, community libraries, workplaces of cooperatives, places for activities of Party cells, Youth Unions... to maximize the effectiveness of facilities that have been invested in or sponsored by the State...
At abandoned schools, glass doors were smashed.
