Editor's note:

For businesses that always consider workers as valuable assets, Tet is also an opportunity to show concern and care for them materially and spiritually to retain workers. According to records, in the 2024 Lunar New Year, businesses that "do well" have their workers fully paid bonuses, and those in difficult places have also tried to give Tet gifts.

This situation occurred at a number of businesses in Thuan An City, Binh Duong Province at the end of the year, causing thousands of workers to worry.

Accordingly, in the days leading up to the Lunar New Year, about 3,000 workers of a leather shoe processing company in Thuan Giao Ward, Thuan An City, Binh Duong Province received a notice from the company’s union that each person would be given a gift. However, the workers did not know in advance what the specific gift would be.

On the afternoon of January 25, when the union organized a gift giving ceremony of 4 boxes of various candies, the workers immediately reacted because they thought it was inappropriate.

The situation became more tense when thousands of workers gathered to protest, demanding that the company give more “reasonable” Tet gifts, since they have to pay 45,000 VND in union fees every month.

A female worker said that every month she has to pay 45,000 VND in union fees, which is hundreds of thousands of VND per year, but the Tet gift she received in return is not satisfactory.

Faced with this situation, the company's union decided to give it to any worker who wanted it, and keep it for themselves.

Withhold 40% of 13th month salary and pay the rest by the end of March

Another case that makes employees worried is that the company withholds part of their 13th month bonus, affecting their daily life.

Mr. NVQ (32 years old, from An Giang) shared that he has been working for a Taiwanese leather shoe company located in VSIP Industrial Park (Thuan An City, Binh Duong Province) for 9 years; he is one of the few people with many years of experience working at the company.

However, at the end of the year, he and the workers have many thoughts when the company gives Tet bonuses .

According to Mr. Q, in previous years, the company would give Tet bonuses in the form of 13th month salary (equivalent to 1 month of basic salary), plus Tet gifts in kind from the union. However, for the past 3 years, 40% of workers' 13th month salary has been withheld for various reasons, including the company's economic difficulties, as well as employee retention.

This year, Mr. Q also had 40% of his 13th month salary bonus withheld, and the company union gave him a gift of sugar, coffee, cakes, and cooking oil. The withholding of his year-end bonus as well as this Tet gift made him and other workers unhappy. They repeatedly complained to the department head, but nothing changed or improved over the years.

“The Tet gifts from the union are meaningful, but we have to make sure they are appropriate, the quantity and quality must be appropriate, and the workers pay tens of thousands of dong to the union each month. As for the 13th month bonus, it should be paid in full to the workers to spend during Tet,” said Mr. Q.

Meanwhile, like many other companies, New Apparel Far Eastern Company Limited (Vietnam) also gave Tet bonuses equal to the 13th month salary to senior workers. At the same time, the union organized Tet gifts for more than 2,900 people working here with a total amount of more than 681 million VND. The gifts were mainly candy and essential items for daily life.

The company's union representative said that this is an annual activity of the union at the end of the year to take care of the lives of workers and encourage them to enjoy the spring. Most of the workers at this enterprise supported it, although the gifts did not have great material value, they had spiritual value during the coming Tet holiday.

Speaking to reporters, the leader of a company employing nearly 5,000 workers said that due to the difficult production situation this year and the scarcity of orders, revenue has dropped significantly. The company always pays attention to Tet bonuses for employees, but it is necessary to cut back and rebalance so as not to affect the company's operations.

According to the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs of Binh Duong province, up to now, nearly 1,900 enterprises have reported on salaries and bonuses for the Lunar New Year of Giap Thin in 2024.

Of the total 1,900 enterprises reporting Tet bonuses, the largest number are foreign-invested enterprises (FDI) with nearly 1,300 units.

The lowest Tet bonus of FDI enterprises is 4.68 million VND/person, the highest is 574 million VND, the average is 7.1 million VND/person; In private enterprises, the average bonus is 6.7 million VND/person; the highest is 330 million VND/person; the lowest is 4.68 million VND/person; In state-owned enterprises, the highest bonus is 42 million VND/person; the lowest is 9 million VND/person; the average is nearly 10 million VND/person.
