Vinaseed's rice varieties 'capture the hearts' of Binh Dinh farmers

Resistant, delicious rice, high price

On April 3, Ms. Nguyen Thi To Tran, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Binh Dinh, together with leaders of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection and the Binh Dinh Agricultural Extension Center, evaluated the rice seed production cooperation field between the Central Seed Joint Stock Company - Quang Nam (Vinaseed Quang Nam) and Nhon Phuc Agricultural Cooperative (Nhon Phuc commune, An Nhon town, Binh Dinh), and also evaluated the experimental production model of Vinaseed's VNR98 rice variety in Tay Vinh commune (Tay Son district, Binh Dinh).

In Nhon Phuc commune, the working group of Binh Dinh agriculture and environment sector was delighted to see the VNR10 rice field and Huong Chau 6 rice field which were ripe and ready to be harvested.

According to Mr. Tran Van Tung, Director of Nhon Phuc Agricultural Cooperative, the 2024-2025 winter-spring crop is the first crop that the cooperative will put into production two rice varieties VNR10 and Huong Chau 6 of Vinaseed Quang Nam. In this winter-spring crop, Nhon Phuc Agricultural Cooperative has built a model of linking rice seed production with Vinaseed Quang Nam with an area of ​​40 hectares, of which VNR10 variety is 18 hectares and Huong Chau 6 variety is 22 hectares.

Mr. Tung said that although this was the first time he introduced the two rice varieties VNR10 and Huong Chau 6 into production, farmers were very enthusiastic in receiving and highly appreciating them because these two rice varieties have many superior characteristics.

“The VNR10 and Huong Chau 6 rice varieties both tiller strongly and are resistant to pests and diseases. The growth period of Huong Chau 6 and VNR10 is similar. In the winter-spring crop, these two rice varieties have a growth period of about 105 - 110 days, and in the summer-autumn crop from 90 - 95 days. In the winter-spring crop of 2024 - 2025, the yield of Huong Chau 6 rice is estimated at 7.2 tons/ha, and that of VNR10 is estimated at 8.0 tons/ha.

The quality of both Huong Chau 6 and VNR10 rice varieties is delicious. In particular, these two rice varieties are easy to care for, can withstand intensive farming, have good resistance to pests and diseases, and are very suitable for Nhon Phuc's soil," Mr. Tung assessed.

According to Mr. Tung, the construction of a model of linking rice seed production between Nhon Phuc Agricultural Cooperative and Vinaseed Quang Nam not only helps improve the efficiency of the cooperative's operations in the new period but also improves economic efficiency in agricultural production.

“To help farmers produce effectively, the cooperative provides farmers with inputs such as seeds and fertilizers, and closely follows the fields from the beginning of the season to guide farmers on sowing, pest control, care, and fertilization. When harvesting, the cooperative purchases all products at a price 20-25% higher than the market price of rice.

Linking to produce rice seeds, people have much higher income than producing commercial rice. In particular, Huong Chau 6 and VNR10 commercial rice are very popular in the market because of their good quality, and the purchase price is equal to other quality rice varieties on the market," said Mr. Tran Van Tung.

Farmers are crazy about VNR98 rice variety

On the fields of An Vinh 1 village, Tay Vinh commune (Tay Son district, Binh Dinh), the VNR98 rice fields in the trial model of Vinaseed Quang Nam show off their beautiful appearance, promising a bumper crop. 10 sao of VNR98 rice in An Vinh 1 village is covered with a golden carpet.

Farmer Tran Trung Thanh (64 years old) in An Vinh 1 village, who has been working in the fields for more than 50 years, said: “The 2024-2025 winter-spring crop is the first time farmers in the village have grown the VNR98 rice variety. I participated in the production of this rice variety with an area of ​​1 sao (500m2). Through actual production, I have seen that the VNR98 variety is very resistant to pests and diseases, the entire VNR98 rice field has never smelled the smell of pesticide since planting. The investment level for producing VNR98 rice is also lower than that of mass-produced varieties, the amount of fertilizer is also less than that of other rice varieties, but the rice still grows very well. In general, the VNR98 rice variety is very easy to make, helping to reduce production costs, and is easy to cultivate," Mr. Thanh shared.

According to Mr. Thanh, the growth period of VNR98 variety in winter-spring crop is more than 100 days, which is suitable. If produced in summer-autumn crop, the growth period will be even shorter, adapting to the lack of irrigation water in the context of climate change as it is today.

“The VNR98 variety produced in the winter-spring crop showed high efficiency. In the summer-autumn crop of 2025, farmers want to continue building a model to test this rice variety,” said Mr. Thanh.

Visiting the VNR98 rice field, Mr. Truong The Viet, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Tay Son district, assessed that with beautiful rice varieties, when harvested, VNR98 rice will definitely yield over 8 tons/ha.

According to Mr. Nguyen Cong Phi, Deputy Director of Vinaseed Quang Nam, the company specializes in trading and supplying rice seeds to farmers from Hue to the South Central provinces with the goal of increasingly improving production efficiency for farmers. In recent years, Vinaseed Quang Nam has implemented a chain of linkages with cooperatives to produce rice seeds. During the process of implementing the chain of linkages, the company sends staff to monitor and guide farmers to produce according to the correct process to bring about the highest efficiency.

“In the joint models, rice productivity is always 15-20% higher than mass-produced rice. The rice varieties that the Company provides to farmers have high resistance to pests and diseases. Farmers use less pesticides, so input costs are reduced and production efficiency increases by about 20% compared to other rice varieties outside the model.

The VNR98 variety is also very drought-resistant, so it is very suitable for summer-autumn crop production. When implementing the linkage model, the Company commits to purchasing all products in the form of buying fresh rice at high prices to reduce pressure on drying yards for farmers," said Mr. Phi.

According to Mr. Kieu Van Cang, Head of Binh Dinh Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, in order to supplement the province's rice variety structure for both winter-spring and summer-autumn crops, in recent times, the unit has regularly coordinated with plant variety companies across the country and localities to organize testing models and demonstrate rice varieties suitable for the province's climate and soil conditions.

“We are particularly interested in rice varieties that have a growing period of 90 - 120 days, are less susceptible to pests and diseases, and ensure productivity, with a yield increase of at least 10% compared to mass-produced rice varieties, while also meeting consumer demand. The ultimate goal is for farmers to produce profitably,” Mr. Kieu Van Cang emphasized.
