The J2-8243 plane crashed on December 25, bursting into flames near the city of Aktau, Kazakhstan, after being diverted from southern Russia, where Ukrainian drones were reportedly attacking several cities. The crash claimed the lives of at least 38 people, while 29 survived.

According to the Kremlin's announcement, in a phone call with his Kazakh counterpart Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Mr. Putin said: "The Kazakh government commission tasked with investigating all the details of the incident will invite Russian, Azerbaijani and Brazilian experts to participate... The investigation, which will be conducted on the territory of Kazakhstan, will be objective and transparent."

On the same day, December 28, Mr. Putin apologized to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev for the "tragic incident" that occurred in Russian airspace related to the plane crash.

The Russian leader stressed that the Azerbaijani passenger plane, which was on a scheduled flight, tried several times to land at Grozny airport. At that time, Grozny, Mozdok and Vladikavkaz were under attack by Ukrainian drones, and Russian air defense systems responded to these attacks.

Regarding the incident, on the same day, December 28, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he sent condolences to his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev.

After the phone call, Mr. Zelensky shared on the X network: "The main priority right now is a thorough investigation to answer the question of what happened."
