Prime Minister Christopher Luxon emphasized that Vietnam and New Zealand have high political trust, share many similarities and have great potential for cooperation in new fields.

From February 3-5, Deputy Foreign Minister Do Hung Viet visited New Zealand under the program "ASEAN Guest of the Prime Minister of New Zealand".

During the program, the Deputy Minister greeted New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, met with Minister for Climate Change Simon Watts, Minister for Defence, Space and Cyber ​​Security Judith Collins; visited Auckland University of Technology, and delivered a speech at the Institute of International Studies and the New Zealand Asia Foundation.

On this occasion, on February 4, Deputy Minister Do Hung Viet and New Zealand Deputy Foreign Minister Grahame Morton co-chaired the 13th Vietnam-New Zealand Political Consultation and worked with a number of relevant units of the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Expressing satisfaction with the strong development of Vietnam-New Zealand relations after 50 years of establishing diplomatic relations (1975-2025) and 5 years of establishing the Strategic Partnership, New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon welcomed the two countries' effective implementation of the results achieved during Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's official visit to New Zealand in March 2024.

Prime Minister Luxon emphasized that Vietnam and New Zealand have high political trust, share many common points and have great potential for cooperation in new areas besides traditional areas such as agriculture and education. On the solid foundation of the past 50 years, Prime Minister Luxon suggested that the two countries' foreign ministries actively discuss and propose practical measures to bring the relationship to a new level in the coming time.

At the Political Consultation between the two Foreign Ministries and in discussions with New Zealand partners, the two sides affirmed that they will coordinate well in implementing activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam-New Zealand diplomatic relations in 2025, especially preparing well for upcoming high-level visits.

The two sides also agreed to further strengthen bilateral exchanges and consultations, consolidate political trust; enhance defense and security cooperation; and strongly implement measures, including increasing market access for products of both sides, in order to bring two-way trade turnover to the target of 3 billion USD.

The two sides also agreed to expand cooperation in climate change, energy transition, science and technology, innovation and digital transformation, making this field a new pillar of bilateral relations, contributing to exploiting the potential and strengths of both sides.

New Zealand is committed to continuing to implement ODA projects on environment, climate-resilient agriculture and energy transition in Vietnam in particular and the Mekong Sub-region in general; continuing to support Vietnam in strengthening its agricultural capacity, providing English training for officials, expanding government scholarships, and encouraging training links between universities.

Discussing regional and international issues of mutual concern, the two sides agreed that the world and the region are facing many challenges, requiring countries to strengthen cooperation and act responsibly, respect the interests of small and medium-sized countries, and contribute to the common goal of maintaining peace and stability, facilitating cooperation and sustainable development in the region.

The two sides agreed to closely cooperate and support each other at international forums, especially at the United Nations and cooperation mechanisms of which both sides are members.

New Zealand affirmed its appreciation of the central role of ASEAN and ASEAN-led mechanisms in promoting cooperation and shaping the regional structure, highly appreciated Vietnam in its role as the coordinator of ASEAN-New Zealand relations for the 2024-2027 period, and wished to further promote the ASEAN-New Zealand Strategic Partnership in the coming years through new initiatives, especially considering establishing a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of ASEAN-New Zealand relations; affirmed to give high priority and resources to implementing practical cooperation with ASEAN in general and the Mekong sub-region in particular.

The two sides agreed on the special importance of peace, stability, security, safety and freedom of navigation in the East Sea; stressed the need for countries to respect international law and resolve disputes by peaceful means, on the basis of international law, especially the 1982 UNCLOS.
