The Vietnam History Museum was built in 1929, the first museum in Saigon and the whole of South Vietnam. The project was designed and built by French architect Delaval in a style combining European and indigenous architecture, exploiting traditional elements and local climate characteristics.

In 1970, a U-shaped building was added to the back of the museum, with a small lake in the middle. The additional building has decorative dragon heads on the roof corners, in harmony with the original architecture of the building.

The museum has an area of ​​3,000 m2, divided into many rooms with 18 exhibition spaces. The rooms are connected to each other in the main hall in the center. This is one of the museums with large exhibition scale in the South with more than 40,000 artifacts originating from many countries and ethnic groups.

The museum's display system consists of two main parts. The first part displays artifacts of Vietnamese history from prehistory to the end of the Nguyen Dynasty. The remaining part is dedicated to the culture of southern Vietnam and some Asian countries, such as the Oc Eo culture, ancient culture of the Mekong Delta, Champa culture and art, etc.

The Tiger Cages are considered the most terrible torture place of the American army for patriotic prisoners. Here, patriotic communist revolutionaries were confined in cells only about 5 square meters wide, without beds or large windows. The first floor is also a place to display large artifacts such as airplanes, tanks or cannons of soldiers or American troops during the war.

The two ground floors of the museum are a world of images and historical milestones that recreate a bloody historical period.

The Southern Women’s Museum used to be the private residence of Major General Nguyen Ngoc Loan – Director General of the National Police of the Saigon government.
