Recently, the movement of elderly people competing in good production and business launched annually by the Association of the Elderly has received strong response from localities, related sectors and a large number of elderly people in Ham Thuan Nam district...

Multi-industry

Together with the Board of Representatives of the Association of the Elderly in Binh Thuan and Ham Thuan Nam district, we went to Mr. Dinh Quoc Nghi's house. This is a model of growing dragon fruit trees, trading in gasoline and solar power, earning high profits of 1 billion VND or more per year. Just passing his family's gas station right on the main road, we immediately saw a rather large villa with a gate that looked majestic at first sight. The land around the villa is quite spacious. We were invited to sit in a hut built in the style of the right side of the villa, where the cool breeze blew in even in the hot summer afternoon. With a slender figure, at 63 years old, he is still very agile. He thoughtfully told us that from the beginning of 1983, he and his wife moved from their hometown of Thai Binh to the South to start a business at the recommendation of relatives. From the initial reclaimed land, he worked hard in the sun and rain to grow melons, corn... He was able to grow, but the difficulty was the output, so he traveled endlessly to Ho Nai, Dong Nai to find an output for agricultural products. So he boldly invested in buying a truck to transport agricultural products for sale and collect more pigs for slaughterhouses there. By 2000, seeing the high demand for transportation, he boldly borrowed from the bank and combined his savings to open a gas station. At the same time, when he saw that growing dragon fruit could make him rich, he transferred all 5 hectares of land to grow dragon fruit. Thanks to the efficiency of growing and doing business, he bought more land and opened a solar power plant. He currently owns 5 rental stores, 1 store selling supplies, 1 truck, 2 dump trucks, built a spacious house on 2,000 m2 , including 400 m2 of residential land, 5 hectares of dragon fruit that have been and are being harvested, and is the head of a clean dragon fruit cooperative with 52 members and 137 hectares... It sounds simple, but through the process of doing business, he has encountered many difficulties. But thanks to daring to think, daring to do, being willing to learn and study from predecessors, and having a capable wife who supports him a lot in management, he has achieved the results he has today.

The movement spread

In Ham Thuan Nam, not only Mr. Nghi but also the movement of the elderly who are good at production and business has attracted a large number of elderly people to participate and many good production and business models have appeared, contributing to hunger eradication and poverty reduction such as: The production and business model of Mr. Nguyen Quang Trieu - 72 years old, a member of the Elderly Association in Tan Thanh commune, who has grown dragon fruit trees, a frog and fish farm with an annual income of 700 million VND to 1 billion VND. The production model of growing dragon fruit trees, opening a warehouse to purchase dragon fruit, and trading in gasoline and catering services of Mr. Tran Xuan Phuc's family - 60 years old in Ham Cuong commune, has an annual income of 1 - 2 billion VND and creates regular jobs for 30 - 50 workers. The model of growing dragon fruit, raising fish ponds, doing business in solar power, and organizing the establishment of a clean dragon fruit production cooperative (VietGap) in the village has Mr. Le Trac Trung - 69 years old in Ham Minh, with an annual income of 1 - 2 billion VND.

According to Mr. Tran Van Muoi, Head of the District Elderly Association, the number of elderly members who are still directly involved in production is 3,118, of which 24 are farm owners and 9 are business owners. There are 217 members who are no longer directly involved in production but have directed and guided their children and grandchildren in production and business or transferred assets, capital, land, boats, businesses, etc. to their children and grandchildren for production and business. Thanks to that, the household economy has developed, and households with conditions in terms of capital, land and labor have boldly invested in production development, especially in developing dragon fruit trees, afforestation, livestock farming, etc., bringing about clear results. It can be said that over the past 5 years, the movement of elderly people competing in production and good business has made remarkable progress, contributing significantly to the socio-economic development of the district, especially in the agricultural and rural areas. Through the movement, many advanced models have emerged in which the elderly are shining examples of the spirit of perseverance in overcoming difficulties, not accepting poverty, determined to enrich themselves legitimately and help others to become rich.
