Recently, Medlatec General Hospital said that this unit received and treated a patient infected with 6 types of parasites at the same time in the body.

Specifically, a 38-year-old female patient (Hanoi) came to the hospital for a routine health check. After an abdominal ultrasound and basic blood tests, the patient was found to have liver damage. In addition, the test for worms and parasites gave positive results for 6 types of parasites, including: Ascaris, roundworms, strongyloidiasis, dog and cat roundworms, large liver flukes and small liver flukes.

Further tests and imaging revealed more nodular lesions in the liver, spleen, and left lung base. The patient was diagnosed with internal organ damage caused by parasites and transferred to the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases for treatment.

The woman said she has a habit of eating raw vegetables and is often in contact with dogs and cats.

According to experts, parasitic diseases are on the rise. Illustration photo.

According to doctors, this case is not rare. In fact, hospitals and medical facilities across the country still record cases of hospitalization due to parasitic infections .

Previously, Ms. NTH, who also lives in Hanoi, was shocked when she received a positive result for dog tapeworm while her family did not have dogs or cats. After going to Dang Van Ngu Hospital, the Central Institute of Malaria - Parasitology - Entomology with symptoms of skin rash, itching, dizziness, difficulty breathing... Ms. H. realized that the cause of the disease was due to the habit of eating raw vegetables.

Or not long ago, at the 108 Military Central Hospital, a patient was successfully operated on with a parasitic dog tapeworm larvae in the lungs. The cause was that this person had a habit of eating raw or undercooked foods many times such as: undercooked grilled lamb, goat blood pudding, raw vegetables and anchovy salad. The patient was diagnosed with fatigue, dull pain in the right chest, and occasional difficulty breathing.

Be careful with parasitic diseases

According to Dr. Hoang Dinh Canh - Director of the Central Institute of Malaria - Parasitology - Entomology, parasitic diseases have high infection and prevalence rates in some areas, causing great harm to health. However, parasitic diseases often have mild clinical symptoms, some have acute manifestations, so they have not received much attention from the people and society.

Among them, diseases such as gnathostomiasis, strongyloidiasis, trichinosis, dragonworm, etc. are increasingly common, causing damage to the liver, brain, lungs, kidneys, and digestive tract, causing acute and long-term effects on people's health, negatively impacting and causing a huge disease burden in the community.

Medical experts have warned that more than 90% of parasitic diseases come from eating habits. In other words, Vietnamese eating habits are causing parasitic diseases to increase rapidly. In particular, the habit of eating rare pork, rare beef, blood pudding, fish salad, aquatic vegetables, etc. is the main cause of parasitic diseases.

In addition, dog and cat roundworm disease is a new parasitic disease that has emerged in recent years due to the increasing habit of keeping pets among young people. The disease causes damage to the liver, brain, spleen, and kidneys and causes allergic immunity, itching, and prolonged rash.

Statistics at Dang Van Ngu Hospital (under the Central Institute of Malaria - Parasitology - Entomology) show that in 2023 alone, the hospital received and treated more than 15,000 people infected with roundworms from dogs and cats. Many of them were diagnosed with tumors, brain, liver, and lung cancer, but the exact cause was due to the nest of worm larvae.

Some habits that easily bring parasites into the body

Eat blood pudding

According to doctors at the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, blood pudding is a dish made from raw blood, so it cannot kill all bacteria and parasites, especially the blood of pigs, chickens, ducks, goats... that are infected.

Therefore, the risk of infection with parasites such as tapeworms, brain worms, and roundworms is very high. Accordingly, roundworm eggs enter the body and develop into larvae. Roundworm larvae can penetrate the digestive tract mucosa and reside in all systems from skeletal muscles to the heart and diaphragm. Roundworm larvae burrow into the brain to nest, causing the patient to have symptoms of headache, nausea, vomiting, and possibly seizures.

Eat salad, rare food, nem chua

Parasites such as tapeworms often live in lean meat and animal organs. Therefore, dishes made from beef and pork meat and organs, if not cooked, have a high risk of parasitic infection.

Meanwhile, many people have the habit of eating rare meat, especially rare beef, to retain the sweetness of the meat. This completely causes users to be infected with parasites such as beef tapeworm (tapeworm), liver fluke if they eat infected beef or pork. These parasites can cause diseases in the digestive system, affecting the intestines, liver and other organs in the body.

Similarly, nem chua is also a dish that is not processed by heat but "cooked" by fermentation. Therefore, if eating nem chua that has not been fermented enough to kill eggs and larvae (if any) of the parasites in the pork, the eater is still at risk of being infected with parasites.

Habit of eating raw vegetables

Many experts have warned that raw vegetables contain many types of parasites such as pinworms, whipworms, hookworms, dog roundworm eggs, liver flukes, amoeba parasites that cause dysentery... especially vegetables grown near areas with polluted water sources and soil.

Furthermore, worms or their eggs and parasites found in raw vegetables are often very small in size, difficult to observe with the naked eye. Therefore, if not prepared properly, worms can easily enter the body when drinking juice or eating raw vegetables directly.

Cuddle and let dogs and cats lick your body

According to experts, dog and cat tapeworms often parasitize in the small intestine of infected dogs and cats. Old tapeworm segments containing eggs break off into segments or short pieces and then move out into the environment through the anus or in the dog or cat's feces. Each tapeworm segment releases eggs into the environment, sticking to the dog's or cat's fur or anus.

Due to the characteristic of dogs, they have the habit of licking all over their bodies, licking daily living objects and can lick the human body if they hug and play with dogs. Therefore, dog tapeworm eggs can accidentally spread everywhere, increasing the risk of disease transmission to the owner.

Therefore, experts recommend that to prevent parasitic infections, people need to eat cooked food and drink boiled water, not eat raw or undercooked food; keep the surrounding environment clean; wash hands properly, wash hands with soap before eating and after using the toilet.

Pet owners need to deworm their pets and especially manage their feces well, because this is a source of roundworm eggs. If hygiene is not maintained properly, owners can easily get infected.
