In 1964, the National Ballet of Cuba, led by legendary ballerina Alicia Alonso, visited the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and became the first foreign art troupe to visit Vietnam.

The delegation's visit took place when Vietnam was still in the midst of a war of bombs and bullets, marking a milestone in the history of solidarity between the Cuban and Vietnamese people.

The troupe continued to visit Vietnam in 1978. During this visit, when Vietnam was completely liberated and unified, the artists of the National Ballet of Cuba were awarded the Friendship Medal.

“If someone asked me what was one of the most emotional moments in my life, I would say it was when I performed in a completely liberated Vietnam,” said legendary ballet dancer Alicia Alonso, founder of the National Ballet of Cuba.

In 2016, leading female dancer Viengsay Valdés, currently Director of the National Ballet of Cuba, also came to Vietnam to perform with talented male dancer Patricio Revé at the Workers' Theater, Hanoi.
