Hungarian athlete Nguyen Thi Oanh achieved a career-best result of 4 minutes 12.28 seconds in the women's 1,500m race at the world athletics championships.
Despite breaking her personal record, Nguyen Thi Oanh could not pass the heat, as she only finished 13th out of 14 runners in the third heat. The women's 1,500m heat consists of four heats, and the top six runners in each heat can advance to the semi-finals. In the same heat as the Vietnamese representative, two other runners also set personal records, but they also had to stop. To reach the semi-finals, Oanh had to run faster than the time of 4 minutes 01.45 seconds of Linden Hall (Australia).
In the end, Nguyen Thi Oanh ranked 51st out of 56 athletes who qualified for this event. The 28-year-old athlete ranked third among Asian athletes, behind two Japanese competitors, Nozomi Tanaka with 4 minutes 4.36 seconds and Yume Goto with 4 minutes 10.22 seconds.
The top qualifier was only 20 years old, Nelly Chepchirchir from Kenya with a time of 4 minutes 0.87 seconds, nearly 12 seconds faster than Oanh. The slowest qualifier was reigning Asian champion Tanaka, but still nearly 8 seconds faster than the Vietnamese representative.
At the 2018 Asian Games, Oanh finished fourth in the final of this event, after 4 minutes 15.49 seconds. The two athletes who topped the event that year were Bahrainis of Ethiopian origin, while Indian athlete Chitra won bronze with 4 minutes 12.56 seconds. If she continues to improve her performance, Oanh could compete for a medal at the upcoming Asian Games in Hangzhou, China in September 2023.
Oanh improved by more than six seconds compared to her performance at the Asian Championships in July 2023, when she finished fifth with 4 minutes 18.84 seconds. Tanaka and continental runner-up Goto also shaved about two to three seconds off the time between the two events.
However, Oanh has not been able to break the national record held by Truong Thanh Hang from the 2010 Asian Games with a result of 4 minutes 9.58 seconds. Thanh Hang also holds the SEA Games record for this event, with 4 minutes 11.6 seconds at the 2007 SEA Games. Both of these parameters are better than Oanh's personal record.
The 2023 World Athletics Championships will take place in Budapest, Hungary from August 19 to August 27. Nguyen Thi Oanh is the only Vietnamese athlete eligible to participate in the tournament, with a special entry in only one event, the women's 1,500m.
