The Vietnamese team won the first gold medal at the 2025 Asian Cycling Championship this afternoon (February 8). Hoang Hai Nam - a 61-year-old amateur athlete - finished first in the individual time trial event.
"Veteran Hoang Hai Nam has just officially stepped onto the podium to present the first gold medal for the Vietnamese delegation at the Asian arena, despite competing with a bike lent by host Thailand. Notably, this is the first time Hoang Hai Nam has represented the Vietnamese Amateur Cycling Association to participate in the Asian arena," the Vietnam Cycling and Motor Sports Federation informed.
Hoang Hai Nam and the early competitors of the Vietnamese team had to borrow bicycles and equipment from the host Thailand. The Thai Cycling Federation bought 18 helmets, 18 pairs of shoes and 18 pairs of pedals for the Vietnamese athletes. In addition, the host also arranged 27 specialized bicycles for the Vietnamese team to choose from.
Previously, all of the Vietnamese athletes' competition equipment was burned on the way to the competition venue by the organizing committee's vehicle on the afternoon of February 5. Sharing on social media, in addition to bicycles, hats, and water bottles provided by the host country Thailand, athlete Hoang Hai Nam had to borrow shoes from his teammates, whom he called "my nephews" to compete.
The Vietnam Cycling and Motor Sports Federation also proactively added vehicles and urgently transported them to Thailand to prepare for athletes to compete in road events.
