" I thought I wouldn't be able to stay in Vietnam for more than a year," Coach Park Hang Seo shared at a party in Korea. This story was shared by the former head coach of the Vietnamese national team before.
Mr. Park added: "Before I came, the Vietnamese team used a coach for an average of about 8 months. I think I am a foreigner so I need to work hard, lower my ego and avoid being criticized ."
The golden age of Mr. Park Hang Seo with Vietnamese football ended after the second leg of the AFF Cup 2022 final against the Thai team. Despite playing very hard, Mr. Park and his team lost 0-1, only finishing second in that tournament. The Korean coach did not renew his contract as VFF wished.
Coach Park Hang Seo was worried he would lose his job.
According to the Korean coach, he came to Vietnam when he was 61 years old. Although he is a hot-tempered and harsh person, he still has to change himself and respect some habits of the local players, especially culture and eating customs. In return, they have to comply with his requests on the field. The biggest problem between coach Park Hang Seo and the players is the language barrier.
Mr. Park shared: " I hated the coach going to the treatment room when I was a player, so I didn't go there and wanted my students to keep the atmosphere, joking after practice. In fact, everyone makes mistakes and you will be scolded when in Korea. I do it differently when in Vietnam to maximize their abilities.
I myself have made many requests to the Vietnam Football Federation, especially regarding the rights of players. I think as a coach, I need to do that. The players have told me that this action makes them feel like we are a family ."
Coach Park Hang Seo also achieved great success with the U23 Vietnam team. He led his students to the final of the 2018 U23 Asian Cup, and the Vietnam Olympic team to the semi-finals of the 18th ASIAD, winning 2 SEA Games gold medals (2019, 2021).
The national and U23 level titles that Mr. Park brought to Vietnamese football (1 AFF Cup, 2 SEA Games gold medals) are more than the number of titles in the previous historical period combined.
