Mr. Park Hang Seo has had an important influence on coach Kim Sang-sik since he started working with the Vietnamese team. Mr. Park is not only his predecessor but also coached Mr. Kim in the past. Coach Kim Sang-sik himself admitted that the success of the AFF Cup 2024 has the mark of Mr. Park Hang Seo behind it.
“He gives me advice after every match,” STN quoted coach Kim Sang-sik in an interview with Korean media after the Vietnamese team won the 2024 AFF Cup.
Mr. Park Hang Seo also regularly follows the Vietnamese team at the AFF Cup. The former head coach of the Vietnamese team went to Laos to watch the first match of the group stage and was present in the stands of Viet Tri Stadium (Phu Tho) in the first leg of the final.
Coach Park Hang Seo came to cheer on the Vietnamese team at the AFF Cup 2024.
Coach Kim Sang-sik added: “I was able to do the job of head coach of the Vietnam national team thanks to his support. I am grateful for the encouragement he gave me. I cannot catch up with the achievements of coach Park Hang Seo. However, I believe that if I work hard, success will come.”
In an interview with STN, coach Kim Sang-sik also mentioned Mr. Philippe Troussier. The Korean coach learned and drew experience from his predecessor.
“I tried to find the weaknesses and improve them. Coach Troussier’s generational change was too fast. He used young players with too little experience. I don’t think they showed their full potential,” said coach Kim Sang-sik.
Using young players is the biggest difference between coach Kim Sang-sik and Mr. Troussier. The Vietnamese team at the AFF Cup 2024 prioritizes experienced players. Only Khuat Van Khang and Bui Vi Hao are the two U23 players allowed to play at the AFF Cup 2024.
Talking about the use of personnel, Coach Kim Sang-sik also shared with VTC News: “ With this tournament, I feel that I have a different mindset, a “cooler” head when choosing players or using them on the field, how to think about winning.
I just think about those things to teach the players, and also how to change people, how to use people properly, and come up with reasonable tactics to perform well in the match."
