There are a number of factors that can increase your risk of developing the disease including smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes, and physical inactivity.

Research also shows that stress can increase the risk of heart problems.

But now, new research has shown that whether you rest or work can also affect your risk of heart disease.

Retirees have lower risk of heart disease

Retired people have a lower risk of heart disease than working people, according to a study led by Kyoto University in Japan, reported The Japan Times.

Since the 1990s, the team has tracked the health of a total of 106,922 people aged 50 to 70 in 35 countries, including Japan and other Asian countries as well as European countries and the United States, for an average of nearly seven years.

The results showed that the risk of developing heart disease for retirees was 2.2 points lower than for working people.

The rate of adequate exercise is 3 points higher among retired people than among working people.

For people who previously worked in office jobs, the rates of heart disease and obesity both decreased after retirement, while the rate of physical activity increased.

Meanwhile, manual workers tend to become obese after retirement.

The study excluded subjects who retired early due to poor health.

One factor that may help reduce the risk of heart disease in retirees is increased exercise after retirement.

Thanks to more exercise after retirement

Associate Professor Koryu Sato, from Kyoto University School of Medicine, said one of the factors that helped reduce the risk of heart disease in retirees could be due to more exercise after retirement.

For working people, it is important to consciously make time to exercise, Mr. Sato said, according to The Japan Times.

The authors write: This new study shows that retirement reduces the risk of heart disease on average.

However, the association between retirement and cardiovascular disease and risk factors appears to be heterogeneous because of individual differences in characteristics.

Some observations also emphasize that the secret to longevity is to work voluntarily without pressure until old age, which creates comfort and spirit as well as working hours, different from working before retirement.
