A long street outside the US Treasury Department was filled with protesters. They crossed the street with signs reading: "Nobody voted for Musk", "Arrest Elon Musk"...
According to The Verge , the protest targeted billionaire Elon Musk as he is said to have access to key government payment systems. "We are witnessing the biggest theft in American history," Senator Chris Van Hollen told the protesters.
People continued to hold up banners calling for his arrest and chanted “jail Elon Musk.” Just days earlier, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) – led by the Tesla CEO – had come into operation.
People hold banners protesting Elon Musk outside the US Treasury building on February 4.
As described by The Verge , the crowd of protesters numbering up to a thousand people included Senator Elizabeth Warren, Representative Jamie Raskin and Representative Ayanna Pressley. They gave many passionate speeches, calling on the government not to cede control to Musk.
The general mood among the protesters was one of tension over Mr. Musk's access to sensitive government data and operations.
Nadine Seiler, one of the protesters, said Elon Musk's access to personal data, social security numbers and even online taxpayer information is a nightmare for the American people. Another protester, Krista O'Connell, feared Musk's access to federal data because she believes "Musk is someone who doesn't follow the rules of ethics."
There is still much debate as to whether DOGE, run by Musk, has the power to influence programming code, change payment systems, or simply read encrypted data.
"Americans' information is at risk, it's every person's privacy. What is Elon Musk going to do with that information? He makes money off of anything he touches," Senator Richard Blumenthal told the crowd.
