Chameleon tool uses a special technique to preserve the image quality of the protected face

A team of researchers has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) system that can protect users from facial scanning by hackers and scammers to access personal information and digital accounts.

This tool is called Chameleon.

Chameleon works by "hiding" the user's face by creating a hidden mask, this artificial intelligence model is optimized for data making it possible to use on low-performance technology devices.

This AI model was published by researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech, USA) in the journal arXiv.

It will help users protect their identities from facial data scanning attempts by hackers and AI data harvesting bots.

“Sharing privacy-preserving data and analytics like Chameleon will help promote responsible governance and adoption of AI technology, and create momentum in the scientific field with responsible innovation,” said Professor Ling Liu, Department of Intelligent Computing Data, Georgia Tech School of Computer Science.

Once the mask model is applied, facial recognition tools cannot detect the image because the scan will show them “as someone else”.

In fact, similar AI tools already exist, but Chameleon has many improvements such as data optimization and higher image security quality.

Instead of using separate masks for each photo, the tool generates a mask for each user based on a few user-updated facial photos, the researchers note.

One of the challenges of this tool is preserving image quality, so the researchers used a dark technique to optimize the "perception" from Chameleon.

It will automatically render the mask without any manual intervention or parameter setting, thus allowing the AI not to overshadow the overall image quality.

This is a privacy-oriented AI tool, the researchers revealed that they soon plan to release the Chameleon code publicly on GitHub, the open source will then be used by developers to integrate into applications.
