On the morning of September 12, the family of Ms. Le Thi Thuan (Son Cong 1 Residential Group, Huong Van Ward, Huong Tra Town, Thua Thien Hue Province) became the gathering place for many women to pack and transport more than 1,000 banh chung, banh tet, banh tay, along with more than 200 jars of lemongrass salt and peanuts to send to the northern provinces affected by storm No. 3.
Ms. Thuan even took a day off from selling noodles to complete this meaningful work.
All the cakes were made thanks to the support of Ms. Thuan’s friends and relatives for raw materials, along with contributions from local people and members of associations and organizations in Huong Van ward. Some contributed labor, banana leaves, lemongrass, and even someone brought a truckload of firewood to cook the cakes.
Ms. Thuan said that because she lives in a low-lying area, on the banks of the Bo River, where there are many floods and the risk of riverbank erosion every year, the people of Huong Van sympathize and understand the hardship that people in the northern provinces are going through.
Ms. Thuan connected with friends to find ways to share and support people in the disaster area. The idea of cooking banh chung and banh tet to send to the flood area was unanimously implemented by everyone.
Since the morning of September 11, Ms. Thuan has prepared the filling, soaked sticky rice, and banana leaves to wrap the cakes. Her humanitarian work quickly spread, not only the people in Son Cong 1 residential area but also in other residential groups of Huong Van ward joined hands to contribute. The women's union, farmers' union, and ward front also mobilized forces to support.
"In 1 day and night, more than 100 people worked hard, both wrapping and cooking. 12 pots of cakes were boiled overnight so that they could be sent out to help people this morning," said Ms. Thuan.
Ms. Thuan plans to make another batch of lemongrass and peanut salt, and at the same time call for donations of clothes, shoes, and books to send to the North to support people in areas affected by natural disasters and floods.
According to Dan Tri reporters, the movement calling for support for people in the North has spread strongly in Thua Thien Hue, an area that often suffers heavy damage from rain and storms.
In Huong Thuy town, in addition to going to donation points to donate money, many people have voluntarily contributed meat, dried shrimp, lemongrass, peanuts, sesame, etc. to process food to send to support people in difficulty.
Typically, Ms. Phan Thi Huong and other women in Thuy Tan commune, Huong Thuy town bought more than 200 kg of pork, 40 kg of dried shrimp, and fresh lemongrass to make nearly 500 boxes of dried pork and lemongrass salt to send to people in the North.
"The value of the food is not great, but it is the heart of the people in the flood-hit area of Central Vietnam, which also regularly receives relief aid from all over the country, sent to the people of the North with the spirit of 'a piece when hungry is worth a package when full'," Ms. Huong shared.
