Born in a poor border commune, Ngo Thi Minh Thu witnessed from a young age that many people, due to not understanding the law, were lured and deceived by bad people, leading to crime. Therefore, she tried to study hard, nurturing the aspiration to become a lawyer with a good understanding of the law to support and provide legal advice to the people of her hometown.

10 years old had to leave the family

Ngo Thi Minh Thu, a first-year student at Hanoi Law University, was born into a poor family in the border commune of Huynh Mo (Binh Lieu, Quang Ninh). Thu has three siblings. Her parents are farmers. During her free time, she does whatever jobs people hire her to do to earn extra money to support her life and her three siblings' education. As the eldest sister in the family, Thu goes to school during the day and helps her parents take care of her younger siblings during the day. However, no matter what subjects she studies, Thu always tries her best to set an example for her younger siblings to follow. At the age of 10, her family was in financial difficulty. Her parents decided to send her to a boarding school for ethnic minorities in the district to reduce the burden of tuition fees for the family and help her have a brighter future. Thu confided: “While many of my peers were living in the loving and caring arms of their parents, I had to live far away from home. Every year, the number of times I go home cannot be counted on one hand. When I first started school, I missed home so much that I just wanted to leave school and teachers and go back to my parents. But thinking about my poor family, my parents working hard every day to provide for the education of all three of us, now that I have the conditions to be supported, I held back my tears and tried to stay and study with my friends". Over time, Thu got used to the boarding school environment, she tried hard and strived to excel. After graduating from junior high school, Ngo Thi Minh Thu was admitted to the ethnic boarding school system, Friendship School 80. In the new environment, Thu became close to many friends from different localities, all with the same goal of studying and building their own dreams to escape poverty. During her high school years, in addition to studying, Thu actively participated in extracurricular activities and movements organized by the school's Youth Union to practice more soft skills and learn communication skills. Especially with her independent personality since childhood, Thu always tries to transmit positive energy to her friends, together striving to achieve good results in studying and training. Thanks to her constant efforts, Thu is always in the top students with excellent achievements in the class, and has been named in the school's excellent Geography team for three consecutive years. In the 2023 High School Graduation Exam, Thu's C00 group achieved 28 points, including 9.5 points for Literature, 9.25 points for History, and 9.25 points for Geography.

Study Law well to become a good judicial officer

Minh Thu is a Tay ethnic so she understands very well the difficulties that people in her hometown face when they do not understand the law. Many gullible women are easily tricked by bad people and sold across the border, losing their lives, or people violate the law without knowing it, only realizing it when they are caught and have to pay a heavy price... Therefore, when she was still in high school, Thu dreamed of becoming a lawyer to bring knowledge of the law to the people in the village, to clearly propagate to them the rights and obligations of citizens as well as how to protect themselves from temptations and social evils. Thu set a goal of trying to pass the entrance exam to Hanoi Law University. Therefore, as soon as she passed the entrance exam to Friendship School 80, this female student tried hard to study and achieved high results. One day she studied in class, one day she went to the library to do homework, review difficult knowledge, and in the evening she studied the subjects in the group she planned to apply for university. Thu confided: “In recent years, the C00 group of Hanoi Law University has always required high scores. Therefore, during the exam preparation process, I was under a lot of psychological pressure, especially during the 12th grade period”. Accordingly, to avoid knowledge gaps, Thu made the most of the time teachers lectured in class, boldly asking questions about the parts she did not understand. At the same time, Thu always did all her homework, arranged a schedule for appropriate subjects and tried to strictly follow the schedule to clearly know which parts she was weak in and how she needed to practice to improve her scores. On the day she received the notice of admission to Hanoi Law University, Thu could not contain her joy, tears of happiness fell because her efforts and attempts during the 7 years away from her family, living independently had initially borne fruit. However, the joy was not over yet, the worry about the cost of studying in university years reappeared, tormenting the poor student's mind. To overcome financial difficulties, after entering school, Thu applied for a tutoring job to cover her living expenses, helping her parents reduce the burden of having to provide a large amount of money every month for her to study in Hanoi. “However, I always spend as much time as possible studying to get high scores to keep my scholarship. I set a goal that after four years of university, I will get an excellent degree to have a stable job to help my parents raise my two younger siblings to become successful people,” Thu shared. Referring to Ngo Thi Minh Thu, teacher Nguyen Thi Minh Hoa - Friendship School 80 proudly shared: “Minh Thu is a beautiful, hard-working, dynamic, agile female student. She has clear goals and plans in her studies. In collective and extracurricular activities, she is very active, enthusiastic and always helps her friends. In the 2023 High School Graduation Exam, with the C00 combination, Thu was the second highest scorer of Friendship School 80. The students of my school are mainly ethnic minorities, living far from their families. I always encourage them to study hard and strive to gain knowledge so that when they go out into society, they will be more confident.
Ngo Thi Minh Thu is one of 142 ethnic minority students and youths honored in 2023 in a program organized by the Ethnic Committee in coordination with the Ministry of Education and Training and the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union.
