On the morning of January 15, information about the national gymnastics team athlete Pham Nhu Phuong revealing that her bonus money was withheld while she was still competing was posted in the media.
According to athlete Pham Nhu Phuong's account with Dan Tri , the incident started in June 2023, when athlete Pham Nhu Phuong asked the head coach, Ms. NTD, to go to the US to visit her family at the end of the year.
Coach NTD required Nhu Phuong to have achievements in the 2023 National Gymnastics Championship before agreeing to let his student go to the US. “Immediately after the press reported on the sudden retirement of athlete Pham Nhu Phuong, we directed the Department of Physical Education and Sports of the Department of Physical Education and Sports to coordinate with the Vietnam Gymnastics Federation to work with the team’s coaching staff. Based on the review and work with relevant departments, we will report to the relevant authorities for handling, if there is any violation, in accordance with regulations and will inform the press agencies as soon as possible,” said Mr. Hoang Quoc Vinh - Head of the Department of High Performance Sports of the Department of Physical Education and Sports.
Pham Nhu Phuong is also a "hot" TikToker on social media. According to Nhu Phuong, everything started when she went to the US to visit friends and relatives last December. After that, she received a heavy disciplinary penalty by being removed from the training list of the national gymnastics team in 2024 and sent back to her home unit, the Hanoi Sports Training and Competition Center. "The teachers said I violated discipline by going abroad without reporting to the Gymnastics Department and the Center's Board of Directors. In fact, I sent a request and notified my two direct coaches about the trip. The teachers agreed to approve my trip, so I went, but when I returned home, I found out that I was disciplined," said Pham Nhu Phuong.
Previously, the coach of the youth table tennis team was also involved in a scandal of "skimping" money from athletes' meals.
