" The Road of Suffering"

According to the reporter's records, before the Lunar New Year 2025, the road repair unit poured graded rock to temporarily repair the section of Pham Hong Thai Street from the intersection with Le Duan Street to Trung Chi Market to facilitate traffic for people and vehicles. However, after a while, the road surface of this section became seriously damaged again.

Present at this road section in early April 2025, we recorded that the road surface was "crushed like soy sauce". Especially from the intersection with Le Duan Street towards Trung Chi Market, about 200m, the road surface was damaged locally, with many large and small mud puddles stretching out, muddy. In particular, there were mud puddles several meters wide, making it very difficult for vehicles to pass. The road section did not have sidewalks, vehicles and people's belongings were left on both sides of the road in a very messy and filthy manner.

Pointing to a truck slowly crawling through the bad road and a few motorcyclists struggling to avoid mud puddles, Mr. Tran Chinh (who lives on Pham Hong Thai Street) said: “This road is very crowded in the morning because of Trung Chi market, people from all over the area gather here to shop. Moreover, the road has no lane dividers and is damaged, so there have been many traffic accidents.”

According to Mr. Chinh, the road surface is rough and full of potholes because there is no drainage system on both sides. People's domestic water flows directly onto the road, rainwater accumulates, and with the large number of vehicles, the road is repaired and then damaged again after a while. It is muddy when it rains, and when the sun shines, dust flies up into the sky. There have been cases where people have blocked cars because they are so frustrated.

“People are fed up and call this a “road of suffering”. Everyone wants the government to soon invest in upgrading and expanding the road. If the government invests in widening the road and building a drainage system to completely resolve the current situation, my family is willing to donate land,” said Mr. Chinh.

Not only affecting the daily life and travel of people, the prolonged serious damage has caused many difficulties for businesses along Pham Hong Thai Street.

Ms. Le Thi Xuan Sen, who runs a restaurant here, shared: “This road has been collapsing and muddy for more than 10 years now. Every time Tet approaches, we see people bringing trucks to dump rocks to repair it, but after Tet, it breaks down again.

In the rainy season, even though the ground is muddy and dirty, it is still bearable, but in the summer, just one small car passing by will cover the whole house with dust, and no customers dare to eat or shop at the roadside stalls. We, the people, earnestly request the government to pay attention to building the road, because living in the city center and having to endure this inconvenience is too much of a disadvantage.

Need to be invested in upgrading

Chairman of Dong Luong Ward People's Committee Nguyen Chon Thu added that Pham Hong Thai Street has been degraded for a long time. In 2020-2021, Dong Ha City will allocate a budget for phase 1 repair, assigned to the Center for Industrial Cluster Development - Industrial Promotion and Public Services to implement. After completion, the ward will continue to propose to build the remaining final section of the route, the city will arrange investment and complete it in 2024.

Regarding the degraded section from Le Duan Street to Trung Chi Market, Mr. Thu said that through meetings with city and provincial delegates, many voters have proposed ideas and the road has been repaired every year. However, due to the large volume of traffic, the road is damaged again shortly after repair.

“The construction of Pham Hong Thai Street has not been in accordance with the planning. According to the planning, the road is wider than it is now. In the short term, to facilitate people's travel, the city budget will only invest in repairing and fixing the current situation, so many sections have not yet been equipped with a drainage system,” Mr. Thu informed.

According to Mr. Thu, previously all the water in the residential area was drained into the fields, but after the construction of Pham Hong Thai urban area, the water had to be collected into the system in front of Trung Chi market, but the drainage was not smooth. The ward has repeatedly made proposals to resolve this situation, but the city budget is still limited. In the coming time, the ward will continue to make proposals for higher authorities to consider.

Talking to reporters, Director of the Dong Ha City Investment and Construction Project Management Board Thai Vinh Hai said that the above Pham Hong Thai road section does not have any project to implement. In his personal opinion, Mr. Hai believes that it is necessary to wait for the Dong Ha City Eastern bypass project to be completed, when heavy trucks will no longer be able to pass through here, then the investment in upgrading will completely resolve the current problems on Pham Hong Thai road.
