As reported by Thanh Nien Newspaper, expert Park Chung-gun of the Vietnamese shooting team has returned to Korea after his contract expired on August 31.
Under the guidance of Mr. Park Chung-gun for over 10 years as an expert, Vietnamese shooting has achieved many achievements, such as 1 gold medal and 1 silver medal of Hoang Xuan Vinh at the 2016 Olympics, 1 gold medal of Pham Quang Huy at the 19th ASIAD, 1 team gold medal of Quang Huy and Trinh Thu Vinh at the 2023 Asian Shooting Championship, or shooter Thu Vinh entering the top 4 of the 2024 Olympics, reaching the finals of both events.
Expert Park Chung-gun offered contract extension
However, during the period after the contract expired, Mr. Park Chung-gun was not contacted to negotiate a new agreement. The Korean expert sadly returned home, without receiving any sympathy, encouragement or thanks. He told Thanh Nien Newspaper: "Maybe I will retire with honor. I am very disappointed and cannot wait any longer."
After that, Thanh Nien Newspaper wrote an article "From the story of Hoang Xuan Vinh's Korean teacher: When will the 'silver' with talent end?", published this afternoon (September 12), with the argument: expert Park Chung-gun deserves to be treated more fairly and professionally.
By the evening of September 12, a source from Thanh Nien Newspaper said: The Department of Sports and Physical Training is preparing a proposal to extend the contract with expert Park Chung-gun. In a letter to the Korean expert, the leader of the Vietnamese sports industry wrote: "Over the past 10 years, Vietnamese shooting under your guidance has achieved proud achievements. Although we did not meet the expectations as planned at the recent Paris Olympics, there were some bright spots that were recognized.

In order to prepare for the goal of winning gold medals for ASIAD 2026 and Olympics 2028 according to the strategy, the Department of Sports and Physical Training needs time to review, evaluate and adjust the plans of key sports, so the cooperation and invitation for you to continue coaching the shooting team will be announced to you as soon as possible.

Specifically, the Department of Sports and Physical Training proposed to sign a contract with Mr. Park Chung-gun in 2 phases:
- 2024: from October 1, 2024 to December 31, 2024
- Year 2025: from January 3, 2025 - December 31, 2025
In particular, the key goal assigned to Hoang Xuan Vinh's Korean teacher is to win 1 to 2 gold medals at the 2026 ASIAD and 1 gold medal at the 2028 Olympics.
It is expected that the Department of Sports and Physical Training and Mr. Park Chung-gun will negotiate in the next few days.
