Soaking your feet in warm herbal water for 10-15 minutes helps reduce joint pain, improve blood circulation, warm your feet, and help you fall asleep easily and sleep deeply.

According to Dr. Huynh Tan Vu, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City - Branch 3, Oriental medicine believes that the foot is the root of the body, gathering 6 meridians and many important acupuncture points. When the foot is soaked in medicinal water, it will affect the internal organs, causing a stimulating reflex, creating excitement and enhancing the functioning capacity of the internal organs.

In addition to the warming effect, foot soaking also stimulates the circulatory, digestive, and nervous systems, strengthens the immune system, increases metabolism, fights inflammation, fights stress, and regulates the body. It frees the body from pain caused by muscle spasms and stiff joints; affects external parts of the body such as the skin and tendons to prevent and treat diseases.

Herbs commonly used in foot baths are warm herbs with essential oils and vasodilators such as ginger, piper lolot, lemongrass, cinnamon, mugwort, Chinese clematis, mulberry, and a little salt.

The appropriate temperature for a safe foot bath is about 35-50 degrees Celsius. Do not put your feet in the water immediately, but keep them away from the water surface and slowly lower them. Soak for about 15-20 minutes; 1-2 times a day. Soaking before going to bed will help you sleep well.

To ensure safety, after soaking, remember to dry and keep your feet warm.

Doctor Vu noted that it is absolutely contraindicated for people with acute inflammation and acute trauma; infected wounds, open wounds; arterial or venous occlusion in diabetic patients; malignant tumors, progressive tuberculosis; drunken patients, and mentally ill patients. At the same time, caution should be exercised in cases of reduced sensation of heat and cold; children; and mentally ill patients.

After soaking your feet, if you massage and acupressure your feet, the effect will increase. If you feel your body warm up and sweat a little, it means it is effective. In addition, you should drink a cup of hot ginger water to keep your body warm, according to Dr. Vu.
