Russia sets arms export record, withdraws from nuclear cooperation agreement with Europe

Rosoboronexport General Director Alexander Mikheyev announced that the order portfolio of this Russian state arms seller by the end of 2024 reached a record high of over 57 billion USD.

The company's order portfolio by the end of 2024 reached the highest level in the company's history, Rosoboronexport's press service quoted Mr. Mikheyev as saying.

This figure exceeds 57 billion USD and creates a supply of military products for 44 countries. The record export order portfolio of Russian weapons and military equipment shows the high foreign trade potential of Rosoboronexport and the readiness of its partners to cooperate.

However, Rosoboronexport stressed that the defense industry's priority now is to meet the needs of the Russian armed forces.

On the same day, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law terminating Russia's participation in the Framework Agreement and Protocol on the Multilateral Nuclear Environmental Program (MNEPR).

The MNEPR Agreement was signed in Stockholm on May 21, 2003 and entered into force on April 14, 2004. Although the agreement has made an important contribution to reducing radioactive contamination in the northwestern region of Russia, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry, cooperation within the framework of the agreement has been practically suspended since 2015-2017.

The parties to the agreement include many countries and international organizations such as Belgium, Denmark, the European Union, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom, along with the European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

Projects under the MNEPR are financed by the Northern Dimension fund administered by the EBRD. Under the terms of the agreement, any participant may withdraw from the agreement by giving written notice of termination to at least one of the depositaries, which is the Russian Foreign Minister or the Secretary General of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
