Poverty does not stop the desire to be rich
According to Decision 861/QD-TTG (dated June 4, 2021) of the Prime Minister, Quang Ninh has 56 communes and towns in the ethnic minority region. This place has many potentials and strengths in agricultural and forestry production but is still a "lowland" of the province. Resolution 06 was issued, arousing the aspiration to rise up and build a prosperous and beautiful life of the people. Accordingly, from emulation movements in labor production, study..., models and typical nuclei have emerged with new thinking, new ways of doing things, demonstrating a sense of responsibility to the community.
Huc Dong commune used to be one of the most difficult localities in Binh Lieu district. In the past, people faced many “fears” and many “no’s”: fear of not being able to sell the goods they produced, no capital, no knowledge, etc.
There have been economic development models here, but they were spontaneous, individual, each household knew its own business, and there was no connection. However, up to now, people's lives have become more and more prosperous, with food and savings.
One of the people who has contributed a lot, creating a strong change in the production method here, is the San Chi ethnic youth Tran Van Hoang. After graduating from high school, Hoang went to study and work in Hanoi. At the end of 2016, this San Chi ethnic youth returned to his hometown with the desire to start a business, to get rich from his family's traditional vermicelli making profession.
When he started, the production calculation was not very favorable. Initially, in addition to his family's cassava area, he mobilized a few households to grow large areas and then harvest and buy back. At first, he only produced about 10-15 tons, so there was excess raw materials, low production capacity, and he could not consume all the products.
“The path to making cellophane noodles is also full of ups and downs. At first, I thought that if I used machines, everyone would buy everything. But I had to stop for a while because I couldn’t find a place to sell them, and people stopped growing them. By 2018, I had learned how to promote the product and found a market for cellophane noodles, but when I returned to production, people stopped growing them. I had to try my best to persuade them and promise to buy all their products before they felt secure enough to continue growing them,” Mr. Hoang shared.
In 2020, Mr. Hoang officially started signing contracts to purchase cassava for the people. When production had a stable output, he stood up to mobilize and establish the Huc Dong Agricultural and Service Cooperative. The Cooperative will support capital, fertilizer, technology, and purchase when the people harvest. Accordingly, the Cooperative produces seasonally from the beginning of October until the end of the year.
With this method, Mr. Hoang has contributed to the development of the traditional profession of producing cassava vermicelli, creating many jobs and stable incomes for the members of the Cooperative and helping people to be more attached to the cassava plant. Currently, the Cooperative provides jobs for about 25 workers. Annual revenue reaches from 800 million VND to 1 billion VND.
Bringing "forest blessings" to your home garden
From a precious and expensive medicinal herb, only found in natural forests, through the hands of Mr. Ninh Van Trang, the yellow camellia tree has now been widely grown in many gardens and hills. In 2005, he decided to stop growing acacia, change fields and land to use hill land to grow tea. Overcoming many difficulties, now, Dap Thanh Forestry Products Trading Joint Stock Company, Bac Xa village, Dap Thanh commune (Ba Che), owned by him, has become the only supplier of seedlings in Ba Che district.
Increasingly affirming its high economic efficiency, yellow camellia has become a valuable medicinal plant that has attracted strong investment from the local government and people of Ba Che district. In addition to developing the growing area and increasing the growing area, Ba Che district has reviewed households growing yellow camellia in the locality and neighboring areas, established cooperatives, and signed contracts with Dap Thanh Forestry Company to support techniques, seeds, and materials, and at the same time, consume raw materials and products from this plant with high economic value.
Ba Che Golden Flower Tea has now become a 5-star certified product in the One Commune, One Product (OCOP) Program of Quang Ninh province. Not stopping there, this product is also taking steady steps, with a specific strategy, to become a national OCOP product.
Willing to donate land to open roads
Forests and fields - every inch of land is closely linked to the lives of the Dao people in Dong Lam commune (Ha Long city). The decision to hand over land to clear the ground for road construction is not easy for any family. The family of Mr. Dang Minh Ngan, Dong Quang village, is one of the typical examples in pioneering the handover of land to serve the clearance of the road connecting Trai Me village (Son Duong commune) to Dong Tra village (Dong Lam commune).
Mr. Ngan said that previously, the family's total land area, including residential land, garden land and agricultural land, was about 2,000 square meters. However, when there was an announcement that the family was on the list of land to be handed over for site clearance, the family discussed and voluntarily handed over 1,700 square meters.
“We strongly support this policy, so we have handed over land for the construction of the road. A wider road will give our people more opportunities to develop their lives,” said Mr. Ngan.
Like Mr. Ngan’s family, many typical individuals pioneered the movement of donating land to open roads. Thanks to that, the completion of traffic works shortened the travel time from the center to the highland communes; facilitating trade helped boost the economic development of the localities.
The exemplary role of collectives, units and individuals has spread the spirit of solidarity in ethnic minority areas, contributing significantly to the province's poverty reduction work. Up to now, the whole province has no poor households according to the Central poverty standards. The average income per capita in 67 communes (56 communes in ethnic minority, mountainous and border areas and 11 island communes) reached 73,348 million VND/person/year (an increase of 29,648 million VND/person/year compared to 2020).
At the 2024 District-level Ethnic Minority Congresses, 172 typical advanced individuals who are ethnic minorities were awarded Certificates of Merit by the Chairman of the District/City People's Committee. Deputy Head of the Ethnic Minority Committee of Quang Ninh Province, An Thi Thin, affirmed that the pioneering role of typical individuals and collectives has spread into a patriotic emulation movement, demonstrated through real people, real deeds, with each specific and practical way of doing things in economic development, building new rural areas, building cultural and civilized life...
