Cultural space of Tet (Vietnamese New Year) of ethnic groups

The Quang Ninh province's ethnic Tet cultural space, themed "Rural Charm - Vietnamese Soul in the Tet Culture of Ethnic Groups in Quang Ninh Province," creates a space for people and tourists to enjoy and experience the traditional Tet atmosphere.

Here, locals and tourists can immerse themselves in a vibrant, bustling, and colorful atmosphere with a variety of activities such as a traditional market space showcasing typical Tet (Lunar New Year) products harvested from the labor and production of Quang Ninh people; a family Tet space introducing and recreating the distinctive Tet atmosphere of families in coastal, rural, mountainous, and urban areas of Quang Ninh; a space for performing folk songs and dances such as Cheo, Chau Van, and Xam of the Kinh people, Then melodies of the Tay people, Giao Duyen songs of the Dao people, and folk dances of various ethnic groups; a space for folk games including throwing the ball, breaking clay pots, cockfighting, stilt walking; and a space for experiencing making banh chung (traditional rice cakes), pounding banh day (traditional rice cakes), portrait sketching, and calligraphy for good luck at the beginning of the year…

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture and Sports of Quang Ninh province, said: “The ‘Tet Cultural Space of Ethnic Groups in Quang Ninh Province’ aims to create a joyful, enthusiastic, confident, and proud atmosphere among all levels of the population regarding the outstanding achievements of the province in implementing the tasks and targets of economic , social, and national defense development in 2024; creating new momentum and motivation to successfully implement Resolution No. 31-NQ/TU of the Provincial Party Committee on the direction and tasks for 2025 with the theme of the year being “Breakthrough in economic development, creating momentum for the new term”.

At the same time, the program aims to awaken national pride, honor and promote the historical and cultural traditions of the nation, improve the spiritual and cultural life, and strengthen national unity, contributing to the preservation, conservation, and promotion of good customs, traditions, and cultural values; and to realize the policies and guidelines of the Party and the State in building and developing culture and people to meet the requirements of sustainable development of the province and the country.

The Dao Thanh Y ethnic people recreate the process of sewing traditional clothing worn during Tet (Lunar New Year).

Ms. Giap Thi Hai (Dao ethnic group, Binh Lieu district, Quang Ninh province) shared: Before Tet, Dao people usually sew the most beautiful clothes for themselves and their families to wear during the Tet holiday and spring outings. At the same time, they clean their houses together, prepare Dao script to paste on the doors and altars, and decorate their homes to ward off bad luck from the old year and welcome good fortune in the new year. At the end of the year, everyone gathers to slaughter pigs and chickens to offer to the gods and ancestors and have a feast. This is an opportunity for relatives to gather and contribute to the Tet feast; each family contributes what they have, but the head of the clan is the most important. During the Tet holiday, there are three indispensable dishes on the feast table: pork, chicken, and sticky rice cakes.

Present at the Quang Ninh Province Ethnic Groups' Tet Culture Space to experience it firsthand, Mr. Truong Dinh Hoe, a tourist from Ho Chi Minh City, happily shared: "This is my first time coming to Quang Ninh to celebrate the Lunar New Year, and it happens to coincide with this meaningful program. Through this, I understand the cultural aspects of the land and people of Quang Ninh province, and the traditional Tet customs of the ethnic groups..."

Recreating the atmosphere of Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year) in the past gives visitors the opportunity to experience and reminisce about the Tet celebrations rich in national identity. This awakens pride and raises awareness of responsibility among all levels of officials and citizens, especially the younger generation, in preserving, safeguarding, and spreading the beautiful traditional cultural values of their ancestors in contemporary life. It encourages everyone to love their homeland and cherish the true, good, and beautiful values in life. At the same time, it creates a cultural space for celebrating the Spring Festival and the traditional Tet holiday; and encourages all levels of society to successfully implement the socio-economic development tasks for 2025.
