The basic ad-free plan is known to be the cheapest plan users can get on Netflix in some countries. It acts as a middle ground between the more expensive ad-free plans and the ad-supported plans. It allows users to stream in HD on one device at a time.
In early 2024, Netflix confirmed that Canada and the UK would be the first regions to lose their basic plan, and now many other markets are facing the same risk.
Accordingly, subscribers to the basic package will receive a notification to switch to a cheaper ad-supported package or one of two advertising packages: FHD for $15.5 (about 400 thousand VND) and 4K for $23 (about 600 thousand VND). All packages support Full HD streaming.
Last year, the company announced that the basic plan would be unavailable to new and re-subscribers, but would still allow current subscribers of the plan to continue subscribing as long as they didn't cancel the plan.
Netflix executives say the streaming service’s goal is to optimize its plan structure. The company wants to give consumers access to multiple price points. The initial price point attracted a large number of subscribers, with advertising now accounting for 40% of subscriptions, and the company is still looking to discontinue its basic plan in some countries where advertising is available.
Currently, in addition to Canada and the UK, Germany, the US, France, and Australia no longer list the basic package.
