Stemming from that meaning, in order to bring a new, comprehensive and strategic perspective on the role of media in sustainable development, thereby accompanying businesses to promote green growth, circular economy and sustainable development in Vietnam, on November 1, in Vung Tau City, the Green Development Journalism Club towards Net zero (Green Media HUB) and the Natural Resources and Environment Newspaper jointly organized a workshop on "The role of press and business leaders in sustainable development".

The role of the press in the green growth process

Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Tran Trong Dung, Vice President in charge of the South of the Vietnam Journalists Association, said that news agencies play a pioneering role in the process of promoting green growth and sustainable development. Because through official information channels, they will convey to the public updated information on strategic orientations, policies of the Government and management agencies related to the implementation of COP26 commitments; Vietnam's sustainable agricultural development strategy to mitigate and adapt to climate change; green economy, circular economy...

In addition, media and press agencies are not only a bridge but also play a leading and active role in propagating and promoting good models in sustainable production and business of the business community. With systematic and extensive propaganda, it will help change the mindset in lifestyle and consumption, from "gray" to "green" for people, businesses and the social community.

With the experience of an organization that has pioneered in environmental protection and sustainable development, Ms. Chu Kim Thanh, Operations Director of PRO Vietnam, said that PRO Vietnam has identified one of the priority strategies, especially in the first 5 years, as communication to increase community awareness.

"We can see a clear change in awareness in recent years in the business community as well as in the residential community about extended producer responsibility (EPR), green production, waste classification at source, green consumption... thanks to communication work. Also thanks to the media, PRO Vietnam is known by the business community, trusted to accompany us", Ms. Chu Kim Thanh shared.

However, according to the Operations Director of PRO Vietnam, in addition to promoting policies, media agencies need to further explore the meaning of these policies, analyze the opportunities when implementing and the risks if not participating, as well as share stories of successful businesses to create inspiration and trust as well as for businesses that have not yet started to learn from experience and implementation methods...

Mr. Le Xuan Trung, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Tuoi Tre Newspaper, Deputy Director of Green Media HUB, said that Green Media HUB and Natural Resources and Environment Newspaper organized a large-scale Green Development Journalism Award with a total prize of nearly 1 billion VND to encourage many quality works.

Sharing about the meaning and quality of the award, journalist Mai Ngoc Phuoc, Editor-in-Chief of Ho Chi Minh City Law Newspaper, said that in order to have high-quality press works on the topic of green development to participate in the award, journalists must invest a lot of brainpower and ideas for the works, thereby inspiring many good topics and unique business ideas for businesses. This is an indirect way to accompany and support businesses in green development.

The pioneering role of businesses

The business community plays an important role in the process of implementing sustainable development goals. The thinking and awareness of the business community will directly impact the results of implementing this goal.

As the leading petroleum trading unit with the largest market share in the country, a representative of Petrolimex said that the choice of Petrolimex's business products plays a major role, affecting the amount of emissions released into the environment. Aware of this, Petrolimex is a pioneer in complying with Government regulations in choosing clean, environmentally friendly products such as: completing the replacement of all RON 92 gasoline products with E5 bio-fuel and officially becoming a pioneer enterprise in trading RON95 gasoline with emission standards level 5 in Vietnam from January 2022.

Accordingly, Petrolimex strives to achieve 50% of revenue from clean, environmentally friendly fuel and energy products by 2030, and by 2045 will reach 100% of clean, environmentally friendly energy.

As an FDI enterprise present in Vietnam for more than 20 years, HEINEKEN Vietnam aims to achieve zero environmental impact by 2030 with measures to minimize net emissions, maximize circular economy and conserve water resources.

HEINEKEN Vietnam has pioneered the use of 96% renewable energy in production and completed the target of brewing beer using biomass heat at all 6 breweries nationwide. While waiting for renewable energy solutions, HEINEKEN Vietnam has purchased Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs) for 100% of the electricity consumed at 6 breweries. All 6 Heineken Vietnam breweries apply the circular economy model of "reuse - share - repair", with no more landfill waste from 2021, 4 years earlier than originally planned.

"Sustainable development activities cannot create a strong impact when implemented alone. Therefore, all businesses need to join hands and accompany each other. Press agencies will help connect and share good practices and innovative solutions from large, medium and small businesses," said Ms. Tran Ngoc Anh, Senior External Affairs Director of Heineken Vietnam.
