A male student who was a poor student, doubted that he had "touched" his dream of becoming an officer.

I thought I couldn't pass high school.

In a small house nestled among the hills, Ha Gia Bao (18 years old, Ward 9, Sao Vang Town, Tho Xuan District, Thanh Hoa) is preparing his luggage with his mother to go to school.

In the recent high school exam, the excellent male student achieved 28.75 points in block C (10 points in geography, 9.75 points in history and 9 points in literature), passing the Party Building and State Administration major - Political Officer School.

"After seeing the benchmark scores, I knew the journey to my dream of becoming a soldier had begun. I cried and ran home to tell my grandmother, mother and younger brother. Then I called my teachers to inform them," Bao said.

Bao said he used to be a poor student and doubted that he could pass high school. When he was in 9th grade, he was encouraged by his teachers and given positive energy. That school year, he entered the provincial geography competition and won an Encouragement Prize.

"The encouragement from my teachers and the first award in my life were like a "push" that helped me believe in myself, from there I tried hard to study and passed the entrance exam to Tho Xuan 5 High School, Tho Xuan District," Bao recalled.

The house is 11km from school, the road is difficult but that does not make the Muong boy discouraged. With the dedicated guidance of teachers, Bao always tries his best and gradually becomes the pride of his family and school. In grades 11 and 12, he won third prize in geography at the provincial level.

Sharing about his dream of becoming a soldier, the male student who scored 10 points in geography said that his grandfather was a soldier fighting against the Americans, and his love for the green uniform of the soldier urged him to constantly strive to reach his dream.

Talking about her son, Mrs. Ha Thi Chuyen (47 years old) said that Bao is a child who has suffered many disadvantages. He was born without his father's love. As he grows up, he becomes more understanding and has never blamed his mother for not keeping his family intact.

"There were times when my child was struggling, I could only encourage him to try hard and overcome adversity. I always said: I believe in you!", Ms. Chuyen confided.

Mrs. Chuyen said that the day her child passed the university entrance exam, she was happy and proud. Neighbors came to visit and congratulate her, which comforted the mother. "My child is who he is today thanks to the teachers who loved, taught, and guided him," Mrs. Chuyen said emotionally.

The second military officer of the Muong neighborhood

Mr. Ha Van Duyen, Head of Ward 9, Sao Vang Town, said that the Muong community in the area was very excited when Bao overcame difficulties, rose up, and passed the entrance exam to the Political Officer School.

"Since the village was founded in 1980, the whole village has only had one military officer. This year, we are proud to show off to other ethnic groups in the area that village 9 will have its second military officer, Ha Van Bao," said Mr. Duyen.

According to Mr. Duyen, previously, village 9 belonged to area 135 of Xuan Thang commune. In 2021, the village left the difficult area and merged into Sao Vang town. However, life and transportation here are still difficult, and the people's educational level is still low.

"On rainy days, the hills collapse and the roads become muddy, making it difficult for the children to get to school. The whole village has 5 children studying in high school and 10 children studying at university. Bao passing the university entrance exam will inspire the children of the Muong people with a "fire" of passion for learning," said Mr. Duyen.

Teacher Do Van Quang, teacher at Tho Xuan 5 High School (Bao's homeroom teacher) said that Bao is a good student, studious, attentive in lectures, and has very good self-study ability.

Bao lacked his father's love. His mother worked alone in the fields and raised silkworms to take care of the family of four. Bao was very filial and loved his mother. After school, he helped his mother pull weeds, dig, pick cassava leaves, and sell cassava.

"During the university entrance exam, we oriented him to join the army to reduce the burden of tuition fees. The teachers were happy that Bao also loved the green uniform and worked hard to achieve his dream," said Mr. Quang.

Sharing memories of her student, teacher Le Thi Chau, a teacher at Tho Xuan 5 High School (Bao's literature teacher) said that 3 years ago, when she came to Xuan Thang Middle School to recruit students, she saw Bao skinny, shy, standing in the corner.

When they learned about his difficult circumstances, the school protected and helped him. Not disappointing his teachers' expectations, Bao worked hard, studied hard, and passed the entrance exam to the Political Officer School with high scores.

"The road ahead is still full of difficulties. I hope you will always maintain your determination to overcome difficulties, try to train hard, and grow up in the military environment," Ms. Chau said.
