At the age of 20, British tourist Richard Klein lives comfortably in a 3-bedroom villa with a swimming pool in Chiang Mai, saving an additional 12,000 USD each year.
Richard Klein decided to move to Chiang Mai in June this year after travelling around Asia with his sister Noel, 29, and “falling in love” with Thailand. Klein quit his office job after earning more money selling on Amazon and realising he could work online from anywhere in the world.

The British couple now live in a three-bedroom villa with a swimming pool for a monthly rent of nearly $854, plus about $30 for electricity and water. That’s half the monthly rent that Richard’s parents pay in London. That’s a savings of nearly $12,000 a year in rent, the amount they would have spent if they had stayed in the UK.
The average rent in London hit a record high of nearly $3,000 a month, up 12.1% year-on-year, according to UK property market research firm Rightmove's Rental Trends Tracker. Elsewhere in the UK, the average rent is nearly $1,600, up 10% year-on-year in 2022.
Richard says Thailand is the perfect destination for “digital nomads” like him. It’s easier to enjoy life here than back home, with freedom to express yourself, cheap prices and nice weather. They’re currently living in Chiang Mai on a student visa. Richard is learning Muay Thai.

"Chiang Mai has the hustle and bustle and the natural scenery," Richard said. In addition, going out in the evening and partying is also considered "very cheap". "You can drink all night without spending more than $35. A drink costs over $1, dinner too," Richard said.
Richard is sharing online business tips and encouraging people to move to other countries to live and work remotely like him.
Even so, daily life in Chiang Mai was “quite lonely” as Richard did not have many relatives or friends. But he was still “really happy” to have moved. “Thailand is a beautiful country,” Richard said.
He plans to stay in Thailand for the next few years as he is involved in several projects on nearby islands and will continue to travel and live in other countries. "Because good opportunities are always ahead," Richard said.
