The White House on Tuesday offered to pay eight months' salary to all US federal employees who agreed to leave their jobs starting January 28, implementing part of an unprecedented plan to streamline the Washington government apparatus.
The Office of Personnel Management, the US government’s human resources agency, has sent out four new directives from President Donald Trump to all 2 million federal employees. One of them includes generous pay for employees who intend to leave as part of an effort to streamline the bureaucracy.
"If you choose not to continue in your current role in the federal workforce, we thank you for your service to this country, and you will be entitled to a fair and dignified retirement from the federal government," the AP quoted the directive as saying.
Accordingly, those who agree to quit their jobs from January 28 to February 6 will be paid their salaries and all corresponding benefits from the time of submitting their resignation application until September 30.
What does President Trump's first week in office reveal about his second term?
The Office of Personnel Management added that the program does not apply to all employees, but that exemptions are available at the discretion of agency leaders. Immigration officials, some national security officials, the armed forces, and the U.S. Postal Service are not eligible for the incentive to resign.
NBC News quoted a senior Washington government official as saying he hoped the measure would reduce the federal workforce by 5%-10%, estimating it would save up to $100 billion in taxpayers' money.
"The salaries of federal government employees come from taxpayers' money, and so the people deserve to have officials who work on their behalf and actually go to work in federal offices, which are also paid for by the people through their taxes," NBC News quoted White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt as saying.
Officials who do not want to come into the office are free to choose another line of work, and the Trump administration will provide an extremely generous stipend for eight months, the spokesperson said.
