Huong Son District (Ha Tinh) is the locality with the largest number of spotted deer for antlers in the country, with more than 47,000. After Tet this year, in the antler harvest season, Huong Son District expects to earn more than 223 billion VND from selling antlers.
The antler harvest season usually begins right after the Lunar New Year, when the weather is still cool. The antler season begins in January and lasts until the end of the third lunar month, with February being the main antler harvest season.

According to people in Huong Son district, deer are easy to raise, grow quickly and do not cost much to feed.
Previously, each deer only yielded one antler crop per year, but now it is possible to harvest 2 to 3 antler crops. Each pair of antlers usually weighs from 0.8 to 1 kg, and there are pairs of antlers weighing more than 2 kg; they are sold for 10-11 million VND/kg.
Deer farmers reveal that we always pay attention to the deer's nutrition, ensuring fresh and nutritious food such as grass, leaves and concentrates. The barn must also be kept clean and airy to avoid disease.
Mr. Vo Van Tuan (56 years old, residing in Son Trung commune, Huong Son district) said: "Compared to other types of livestock, raising deer requires less care, low raising costs but the efficiency is many times higher.

Deer are wild animals that eat very little, only 1/3 of what a buffalo eats. Their main food is grass and leaves. When the deer starts to grow antlers, they are supplemented with corn and sticky rice. Raising this animal has helped my family's economy improve."

Nguyen Hong Tiep’s farm in village 8, Son Giang commune, is currently raising nearly 800 deer, including about 500 male deer. Although it is just the beginning of the harvest season, his farm has already harvested more than 70 kg of quality deer antlers.

Mr. Tiep said: "Last year, the farm harvested more than 160 kg of velvet from 300 male deer, bringing in revenue of about 1.6 billion VND. This success helped us expand our scale and connect with many other deer farmers."

Deer farming is not only a traditional profession but also an industry that brings high economic value to the people of Huong Son.
Currently, Huong Son district has a total herd of more than 47,000 deer, of which about 22,000 are male deer producing antlers. This year's antlers harvest is expected to reach more than 20.3 tons of antlers, bringing an estimated economic value of more than 220 billion VND.
Thanks to deer farming, the lives of Huong Son people have improved significantly, while helping the locality develop sustainably.
