On February 4, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said that the country has begun deploying 10,000 troops to the border as promised to his US counterpart Donald Trump in exchange for delaying the imposition of a 25% tariff on exported goods.

"The deployment has begun," President Sheinbaum told reporters, AFP news agency reported.
Her statement came a day after Mexico announced a last-minute deal with Mr Trump to step up measures to combat illegal migration and the smuggling of the opioid fentanyl across the border.
The agreement was agreed upon by the Mexican President and his US counterpart during a phone call on the morning of February 3 (local time), within the framework of the negotiation process between the two governments to resolve trade tensions caused by the new tax that the White House plans to apply from February 4. Washington has currently postponed the imposition of tax on Mexico for 1 month.
On the social media platform X, Ms. Sheinbaum said that the phone call with Mr. Trump took place in an atmosphere of “goodwill and mutual respect,” focusing on bilateral relations and national sovereignty issues.
“Mexico will immediately increase control at the northern border by deploying 10,000 National Guard troops to stop drug trafficking into the United States, especially fentanyl,” she said.
For its part, the United States has pledged to work to stem the flow of heavy weapons into Mexico, a problem that has strengthened the power of domestic criminal organizations.
Accordingly, expert groups from the two countries started working from February 3 in two key areas: security and trade.
