According to AFP news agency, speaking to the press, the British Prime Minister's spokesman said that Mr. Starmer will chair a meeting with European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on May 19.
This will be the first in a series of "annual summits" aimed at shaping Britain's relationship with the EU, as the Labour Party leader seeks closer ties with European neighbours following tensions over London's 2020 exit from the EU (Brexit) under the Conservative government.
“This first summit will provide an opportunity to make further progress in areas that will deliver tangible benefits for the British and EU people, and further strengthen the special relationship between the UK and the EU,” the spokesman said.
Speaking at a late-night press conference after meeting Prime Minister Starmer on February 4, European Council President António Costa said the summit would focus on delivering “the closest possible relationship we can build together”.
For her part, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said London and the 27-nation bloc would "discuss the structure and format" of deeper security cooperation among other topics.
Since taking office last July, Labour's Prime Minister Starmer has pledged to "reset" relations with the EU - which were often frosty under Britain's previous Conservative government. A summit in May is expected to detail the reset.
However, information about the format of the meeting and whether EU member states will participate has not yet been released.
