Plane crashed in a crowded residential area, burning down many houses

A small plane crashed near Northeast Philadelphia Airport on January 31, causing a massive explosion that lit up the night sky and burned down several homes.


According to the New York Post, the plane is believed to have crashed in the Roosevelt Mall area near Cottman Avenue and Roosevelt Avenue at around 6 p.m. (local time).

Meanwhile, CBS News said the plane carrying two passengers caused a violent explosion that set many houses on fire.

According to video recorded by Fox29 , black smoke billowed from the area where the plane crashed and debris was scattered across the shopping center's parking lot.

Local police, rescue workers and firefighters were at the scene.

Police confirmed that two people were on board the plane. It is not yet clear whether they were ejected or were able to escape. Police added that there were several injured people on the ground.

CBS News, citing police, reported that parts of the plane had hit cars in the area. Several businesses near the Roosevelt Mall were on fire, the source confirmed.

Many residents in Northeast Philadelphia said their homes shook when the plane crashed.

It is still unclear what caused the crash or where the plane came from or where it was headed.

The condition of the injured has not yet been released.

The incident comes just days after a plane collided with a military helicopter in mid-air, killing 67 people in Washington.
