The US military plane crash occurred at 2:47 p.m. on November 29 (Japan time). Locals said the Osprey caught fire from the left engine when it crashed into the sea, according to Japanese television station MBC.

A spokesman for the Japan Coast Guard said they had no further details about the incident, including the safety of those on board the Osprey that crashed, Reuters reported. There were eight people on board the US military aircraft at the time of the incident.

A spokesman for US forces in the area said they were still gathering information about the incident.

Earlier in August, a US Osprey crashed off the northern coast of Australia while transporting troops during an exercise, killing three US Marines.

Another US Osprey crashed into the sea off the southern Japanese island of Okinawa in December 2016, forcing the US military to ground the aircraft.

The Osprey is a tiltrotor aircraft, capable of flying like a helicopter and a fixed-wing aircraft, used by the US Marine Corps, US Navy, and Japan Self-Defense Forces (SDF).

The deployment of the Osprey in Japan has been controversial, with critics saying the aircraft are prone to accidents. Meanwhile, the US military and the SDF insist the Osprey is safe.
