AFP on February 22 quoted the Vatican Press Office as saying that Pope Francis will be absent from the Angelus prayer on Sunday (February 23). This is believed to be the first time the head of the universal church has been unable to attend the mass for two consecutive weeks due to health reasons.

The medical team treating the Pope gave mixed signals about his health condition, saying he was still in a dangerous state, but his life was not in danger, according to Reuters.

On February 22, the Vatican only briefly reported that the Pope had a peaceful night. However, unlike the previous two days, the news did not mention whether he was able to sit up or get out of bed for breakfast.

The Vatican has not released any photos of the 88-year-old pope since he was hospitalized on February 14 with bronchitis, which later turned into pneumonia.

While Pope Francis is hospitalized, Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin addresses speculation surrounding the Pope's possible resignation due to health reasons, as well as a potential successor.

Responding to the Italian daily Corriere della Sera published on February 22, Cardinal Parolin admitted that such discussions are normal, but he did not comment on useless speculation.

"We are now thinking about the health of the Holy Father, his recovery and his return to the Vatican, these are the only things that matter at this moment," said the Cardinal Secretary of State.

Cardinal Parolin also admitted that he has not yet met the Pope since he was hospitalized, because he believes that the fewer visitors the better, so that the Pope has more time to recover and the treatment process is more effective.

Corriere della Sera newspaper on February 21 quoted Italian Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi as saying he did not rule out the possibility of Pope Francis resigning.

However, Cardinal Manuel Fernandez, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, said he had not yet heard of the possibility of an upcoming conclave, a closed meeting of the College of Cardinals to elect a new pope.

"I don't see more talk about a potential successor than there was a year ago," Cardinal Fernandez told Argentina's La Nacion daily.
