Mason Greenwood is said to prefer a move to Marseille over other destinations. The 22-year-old striker has also been linked with Juventus, Lazio, Napoli, Valencia and Benfica after his season-long loan at Getafe ended. But now French giants Marseille have joined the race, with talks between the two clubs ongoing.
Greenwood was loaned out to Getafe last September after the United board decided it was best for the England international to leave Old Trafford. He was charged with assaulting his girlfriend but the charge was later dropped.
The Red Devils then conducted a six-month internal investigation before deciding to loan the 22-year-old out. Now Sir Jim Ratcliffe is ready to welcome the striker back into pre-season training if negotiations for Greenwood's sale cannot be negotiated in the next two weeks.
Greenwood scored 10 goals and provided six assists for Getafe last season, attracting interest from a number of European giants. Reports suggest Marseille are in contact with Manchester United, with the Red Devils reportedly keen to offload Greenwood for around £30m. The England international is now entering the final year of his contract at Old Trafford.
The Athletic explains that Greenwood now wants to join Marseille over other options. Marseille recently appointed former Brighton coach Roberto De Zerbi as their new "captain" after finishing only 8th in Ligue 1 last season.
Lazio are another club strongly linked with Greenwood, but talks with the Red Devils remain open. Meanwhile, Getafe were also interested in buying the England international but were unable to secure a deal.
After Ratcliffe bought a 27.7% stake in Man United earlier this year, he confirmed that a “new decision” would be made on Greenwood. The British billionaire explained: “I can talk about principles. I won’t talk about Mason Greenwood. Principles are the most important.
We're going to have other problems in the future. You're dealing with young people who haven't always been brought up in the best of circumstances, who have a lot of money and they don't always have the guidance that they should have."
United players not involved in Euro 2024 or Copa America 2024 are expected to return to Carrington on July 8. If nothing is done by then, Greenwood will have to return to training. The same goes for Jadon Sancho, another player United are keen to sell this summer.
