Man City are expected to pocket around £166m from Premier League funds and prize money this season, a record high for any champion of England's top flight.
When Pep Guardiola's side won their fourth Premier League title in five years last May they made £153m, but that figure will rise this year as a raft of overseas TV deals improve from the 2022/23 season.
According to the Mail on Sunday's predictions of bumper payouts this season, the 20 clubs will share around £2.7bn from the league.
Each club's prize money consists of six separate elements: an equal share of domestic and foreign television money; varying amounts of domestic and foreign cash based on performance, i.e. finishing position in the league; base money that increases the more often a club appears in a live TV match in the UK, and a share of the league's commercial income.
All foreign TV rights money used to be shared equally until the biggest clubs began agitating for a bigger slice of it for themselves. They argued that the most watched teams in the world were Manchester United and Liverpool, and to a lesser extent Chelsea and Arsenal, as well as the Big Six away teams, so they should get more money.
A compromise was reached that from the 2019/20 season, any additional foreign money in that rights cycle would be split based on performance (position), rather than equally. Then the Covid-19 pandemic hit, causing a chaotic split after some broadcasters needed to reduce their rates.
The 2022/23 season is the first year of the new rights cycle, which is believed to be the first time the new allocation method becomes clear, with Southampton in 20th place expected to receive just around £1.5m in overseas TV rights and Man City receiving around £22m.
