MU needs a lot of money to find a new coach

Wrong decision

At the beginning of the 2024-2025 season, MU has a new leadership team in the football sector, when billionaire Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS Group spent more than 1.3 billion pounds to buy 27.7% of shares to co-own the English giant team with the Glazer family. In Mr. Ratcliffe's first decisions when the structure of the "Red Devils" in Manchester had problems, he needed to keep or replace coach Erik ten Hag. The 54-year-old Dutch coach had just finished his second season helping MU win the FA Cup, after winning the League Cup the previous season.

Coach Nistelrooy (left) replaces Erik ten Hag, will he help MU overcome difficulties?

During the tenure of coach ten Hag, MU spent more than 616.8 million pounds to buy players, but in return they only won 2 domestic championship trophies, while their playing style was undefined and lacked identity. In major arenas such as the Premier League, the "Red Devils" performance dropped from 3rd place in the 2022-2023 season to 8th place in the 2023-2024 season. In European cups, they were also unsuccessful, going as far as the quarter-finals of the Europa League, while being eliminated early in the Champions League group stage (bottom position).

This shows that the performance is not commensurate with the huge investment, because MU has spent a lot of money to buy players as required by Mr. ten Hag, but most of them have not met expectations. Therefore, when billionaire Jim Ratcliffe and his associates at INEOS Group took over the football division of the team, MU fans expected them to replace this coach with a new strategist with better stature and strategy for a new start.

However, this new leadership team made the wrong decision, which was to continue to put their faith in coach ten Hag with their project, they even signed a contract extension with him until June 2026. In addition, they added former player Ruud van Nistelrooy and assistant Rene Hake to the coaching staff, while letting veteran assistant coaches Mitchell van der Gaag and Steve McClaren leave.

MU was expected to change when coach ten Hag continued to be given the opportunity to buy players to complete the squad in his third season. They spent nearly 180 million pounds for this coach to bring in 5 new players, but everything remained the same, even somewhat declining and deadlocked.

MU has gone through the most disastrous streak in the club's history, with only 3 wins in the Premier League after the first 9 matches of this season, 2 draws and 4 losses; 3 draws in the Europa League. After the loss to West Ham on October 27, MU's board of directors decided to fire coach ten Hag after nearly 2 and a half years of working together.

Alternatives

In the immediate future, assistant coach Nistelrooy will temporarily lead MU in the next 2 matches, including against Leicester City in the 4th round of the English League Cup (at 2:45 am on October 31), and against Chelsea in the 10th round of the English Premier League (at 23:30 pm on November 3). At the same time, they are looking for a suitable new coach.

According to the British press, MU secretly negotiated with Mr. Xavi (former coach of Barcelona FC) 10 days ago, and most recently coach Ruben Amorim of Sporting CP FC. In addition, the list of coaches that the "Red Devils" leadership is also aiming for is Edin Terzic (former coach of Borussia Dortmund FC) or Thomas Frank of Brentford FC...

Choosing one of these coaches to lead the team will cost MU a lot of money, including a very high salary (around 10 million pounds/season). Not to mention the contract termination fee, as in the case of coach Ruben Amorim, it is 8.3 million pounds for Sporting CP, because his contract is until June 2026. Meanwhile, firing coach ten Hag ahead of schedule will also cost MU 15 - 17 million pounds in compensation, according to Mail Sport (UK).

MU's board of directors has recently drastically cut costs to restructure the club's financial foundation. They have even decided to terminate the ambassadorial contract of legendary coach Alex Ferguson...

This situation shows that MU must solve many financial problems before they can recruit a new coach. But in the short term, they can put their trust in coach Nistelrooy, a person who is very knowledgeable about the team's history, to help the team temporarily overcome difficulties, before calculating the next solutions.
