According to the Department of Intellectual Property (Ministry of Science & Technology), in 2023, this unit received more than 156,000 applications for establishing industrial property rights of all kinds, an increase of 11% compared to 2022).
Of which, 84,000 applications for industrial property rights (up 8.5%) and 71,660 other types of applications/requests (up 14.1%). Notably, the number of patent applications increased by 10.6% and industrial design applications increased by 11.8%.
With the high number of applications received, in 2023, the Intellectual Property Office processed 125,778 applications of all types. Including 74,130 applications for registration of industrial property rights (up 13.2% compared to 2022) and 51,648 other applications/requests (up 6.6%).
During this period, the Intellectual Property Office granted 36,977 industrial property protection certificates of all kinds. This unit also granted 202 certificates of registration of collective trademarks, certification trademarks and 7 certificates of registration of geographical indications for local specialty products.
In the context of the fourth industrial revolution, intellectual property protection is a "hot" issue not only in Vietnam but also in many other countries around the world.
Speaking to the press, Mr. Luu Hoang Long, Director of the Department of Intellectual Property, said that intellectual property is playing an increasingly important role in the development of the country and localities. Intellectual property activities in Vietnam are increasingly linked to economic and social development.
The highlight of this field in 2023 is the issuance of documents guiding the implementation of the Law on Intellectual Property. Notably, Decree No. 65/2023 of the Government details a number of articles and measures to implement the Law on Intellectual Property on industrial property, protection of industrial property rights, rights to plant varieties and state management of intellectual property. Along with that is Circular No. 23/2023 related to procedures for establishing industrial property rights and ensuring industrial property information.
In 2024, the Intellectual Property Office will promote international cooperation when participating in negotiations on intellectual property content within the framework of new-generation free trade agreements. At the same time, this unit will preside over the development of plans for negotiating documents on genetic resources and traditional knowledge.
Along with negotiating new international treaties, the National Office of Intellectual Property has been coordinating with relevant agencies to implement international treaties that Vietnam has signed or joined such as the Bilateral Trade Agreement with the US (BTA), the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), the Vietnam-EU Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), the Vietnam-UK Free Trade Agreement (UKVFTA), the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP)...
