In recent times, Yen Hoa commune (Da Bac district, Hoa Binh province) has had many solutions, focusing on developing livestock models, gradually reducing poverty, increasing income, and bringing high efficiency.

Among the effective livestock models in Yen Hoa commune, the black pig farming model has created conditions for people to develop their economy, many households have escaped poverty, and at the same time preserved the valuable genetic resources of the native pig breed.

Mr. Nguyen Viet Phuc, Men hamlet is one of the households raising the most native black pigs in the commune with 80 pigs at peak times, serving the needs of restaurants, holidays, Tet, funerals, and weddings in and outside the area.

With 10 years of model development, his family's herd of pigs has exported specialty black pigs to many places such as Hanoi, Phu Tho, Hoa Binh City and neighboring localities, developing livestock farming on a commercial scale.

Starting with the model of 5 special black pigs, initially effective, Mr. Phuc boldly borrowed capital from the Social Policy Bank, the Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, invested in barns, expanded production, applied the livestock farming method of "taking short-term to raise long-term", maintaining a herd of 50-80 pigs, increasing or decreasing the number of herds depending on prices and market demand.

In the process of raising specialty pigs, in addition to the accumulated experience in raising pigs, Mr. Phuc also followed the technical instructions and disease prevention measures of veterinary staff, so the pigs grew quickly and did not get sick.

He also grows cassava and corn as feed for the native black pigs to reduce input costs. Every year, his family sells more than 100 specialty black pigs for meat, bringing in an income of nearly 100 million VND.

The indigenous black pig farming model of Mr. Nguyen Viet Phuc (standing in the middle), Men hamlet, Yen Hoa commune (Da Bac district, Hoa Binh province) brings in an income of nearly 100 million VND/year. The price of live pigs, which are indigenous black pigs, is always higher than the price of regular live pigs.

"Since visiting and learning from large-scale pig farming models, fully implementing veterinary measures, and applying them to my family's model, my pigs have been less sick and have high economic efficiency.

Native pigs are mainly fed vegetables, tubers and agricultural by-products. Although they grow slowly and weigh only 20 - 30 kg/pig, the meat quality is delicious, much better than that of conventional pigs.

In addition to pure food, I feed the pigs with soybeans, fish meal and sugar, creating a special delicious flavor of the native black pig product" - Mr. Phuc shared the secret.
The family of Ms. Ha Thi Hoa, Men hamlet also has a good income from raising native black pigs. In 2020, she borrowed 50 million VND from the production development capital of the Social Policy Bank and borrowed from friends and relatives, she bought piglets, invested in building a closed barn, and used additional agricultural by-products as pig feed.

With the sharing and guidance from experienced people in raising specialty pigs in the area, she vaccinated all kinds of vaccines, cleaned the barn, and monitored the health of the pigs every day. Since then, she has maintained a herd of over 100 pigs, bringing in an income of more than 120 million VND/year.
Currently, Mr. Phuc and Ms. Hoa are both members of Yen Hoa Clean Food Cooperative, specializing in providing specialty pork products and local pork to partners, traders, and restaurants in and outside the area.

Yen Hoa commune's native black pigs have long established a reputation in the market, with delicious, high-quality meat products that often cannot meet the needs of the market inside and outside the province. The average price of native black pigs is 100,000 VND/kg.

To continue developing the indigenous black pig herd towards becoming a key specialty product, Yen Hoa commune has actively supported and helped people with loans, organized training courses on pig farming and disease prevention for livestock.

Yen Hoa Clean Food Cooperative was established in June 2023 with 6 members and continues to recruit new members, share experiences, and help each other in the production process.

Up to now, the total herd of specialty pigs in the commune is over 70% native black pigs. The average income per capita of the commune is 40.3 million VND/year.
Comrade Luong Van Xung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Yen Hoa commune (Da Bac district, Hoa Binh province) said: "In the coming time, the commune will continue to promote the breeding of indigenous black pigs in the direction of commodities, finding a reputable and stable source of breeding.

The locality also supports breeding animals and livestock farming techniques for poor households and households in difficult circumstances; encourages households to raise livestock according to biosafety standards associated with environmental protection, gradually building a brand for the main product of indigenous black pork of Yen Hoa commune.
