Among nearly 40 provinces and cities that have announced a third subject for the 10th grade entrance exam, the largest number of localities have chosen English. Parents in Hanoi are still waiting for the Department of Education and Training to announce the exam plan.
In the regulations on secondary and high school admissions from 2025 issued in early January 2025, the Ministry of Education and Training stipulates: The entrance exam for grade 10 includes two compulsory subjects: Math, Literature and a third subject (or a combined exam) selected by the Department of Education and Training from subjects assessed by scores, but no subject can be selected for more than three consecutive years. To date, nearly 40 provinces and cities have announced the third exam subject for grade 10.

According to Tran Si Thanh, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Dak Nong province, after many years of implementing the method of admission to grade 10 (in addition to Nguyen Chi Thanh High School for the Gifted and N'Trang Long Boarding High School for Ethnic Minorities), this year, for the first time, Dak Nong is piloting the entrance exam with 11 out of 32 public high schools in the area.
The goal of Dak Nong province in organizing the 10th grade entrance exam is to promote students' learning, training, fostering, and consolidating their capacity and knowledge before entering high school, and teachers to improve the effectiveness of innovative teaching and assessment methods, thereby improving the teaching quality of all schools in the province.
Meanwhile, Gia Lai and Vinh Long organize non-specialized 10th grade entrance exams, but still choose English as the exam subject for candidates applying to specialized schools.

When will Hanoi announce the third exam subject for grade 10 in 2025?
Recently, a representative of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training said that they are urgently researching and drafting a plan to enroll students in the first grades of the 2025-2026 school year, including enrolling students in grade 10.
Admission to grade 10 will be conducted through an entrance exam, including two subjects: Literature and Mathematics; the third exam is expected to be announced in February 2025. This is also the timeline according to the direction of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh sent to the Minister of Education and Training and Chairmen of People's Committees of provinces and cities.
A representative of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training said that this year's 10th grade entrance exam is the first exam of the 2018 general education program. The Department will decide when to announce the third exam subject and when to implement it for the best results. Thus, in just a few days, parents and students in Hanoi will know about the third exam subject to have a more effective study plan.
