Late in the afternoon of September 17, the leaders of Hanoi Medical University had a special meeting with 108 new students of the 2024-2025 school year - a "talented" reunion, as they were all valedictorians of their majors and students were admitted directly to the school with international and national awards.
Among the 1,732 students admitted to Hanoi Medical University this year, the valedictorian title belongs to Nguyen Dang Linh Chi with 29.55 points (Math 9.8, Chemistry 10 and Biology 9.75).
Among the 95 students admitted directly, 4 students won international awards, including Dang Tuan Anh, Nguyen Sy Hieu, Nguyen Tien Loc (International Biology Olympiad Gold Medal) and Nguyen Huu Tien Hung (International Chemistry Olympiad Gold Medal). In addition, 15 students won first prize in the National Excellent Student Competition in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, English and 72 students won second prize.
This meeting was a very rare event with the entire Board of Directors of Hanoi Medical University. What was special about this meeting was that the school leaders acknowledged and congratulated the new students on their academic achievements with high scores and international and national awards, but advised them to “forget their past achievements”.
Instead of flowery words, the professors frankly pointed out the challenges that new students will face when choosing to study at this school to become future physicians.
Professor Nguyen Huu Tu - Principal of Hanoi Medical University - affirmed that the new students sitting here are those with the best academic achievements and expects "you will be more excellent than us, becoming excellent leaders, experts, and researchers, to lead the school and the medical industry further in the world".
Professor Tu also said that studying at Hanoi Medical University is a very different path from what you have achieved before. If you are not wholehearted, persistent, and determined to overcome difficulties, you will not succeed. Because there are students who have won very high excellent student awards, but studying here is still disappointing, not suitable. Some students continue to study, but do not achieve their goals as well as the school's expectations.
The principal of the prestigious school advised: Quickly change your state, enter medical school as soon as possible, be ready to accept the changes, the very different things of medical school. With your existing capacity and qualities, if you are persistent, determined, and find the right path, you will definitely succeed. The school always has support activities and the teachers are also ready to help you. I hope you never give up."
Chairman of the Board of Hanoi Medical University - Professor Ta Thanh Van - also frankly said: 5 years ago, scientists of Hanoi Medical University conducted a study and found that the academic performance of the group of students who were directly admitted and won national and international awards was no different from that of normally admitted students.
After that research, the school has many solutions to create conditions for students to develop their abilities, by establishing many forums and clubs for students to participate in outside of class hours...
“But the most important thing I want to advise you is to let the glory go to the past and focus on studying right now. The faster you let it go, the more successful you will be,” shared Professor Ta Thanh Van.
The Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hanoi Medical University also noted: When you are in high school, your family and school supervise you. But here, you are completely free. If you keep living in the glory of the past, it will be very difficult to succeed. Entering medical school is a completely different journey. The skills of a doctor are very different. Being good at math does not mean being good at surgery.
“Students who are admitted directly have a good foundation and very good high school results, so if they are not among the outstanding students of the entire course or the excellent students of the entire course, it will be a pity. They need to be aware of their responsibility to themselves, then their responsibility to the school. Therefore, from the very first minute, it is necessary to determine to build a plan like the school's slogan: "Study well, dream a lot, love passionately" - Professor Van shared.
At the meeting, new student Nguyen Tien Loc confided: Studying and training at Hanoi Medical University is a great honor, moreover, I am proud to be one of the excellent candidates who are the top candidates and directly admitted, but this is only the beginning of a long and challenging journey to become a doctor.
