Accordingly, at noon on February 12, a student of WellSpring Saigon International Bilingual School (Ward 22, Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City) discovered larvae in his pan-fried salmon dish. This student informed his friends and school representatives.
Immediately after receiving this information, the school's kitchen department reviewed the entire preparation process. The menu for the students that day included the following dishes: vegetable soup with minced meat, spaghetti with minced beef sauce, salmon sauteed with rosemary, white rice, mashed potatoes, egg salad, red plums (for primary school students), and Phan Rang green apples (for secondary school students).
Through testing, the school confirmed that the larvae came from green apples, as the apple compartment was located next to the pan-fried salmon compartment in the students' lunch tray.
According to the school representative, apples are fresh fruits, which are at risk of naturally containing larvae even though they may have been processed. When checking the remaining apples in the distribution area, the kitchen staff also discovered some apples containing larvae. Green apples were selected to be added to the school's boarding menu, in order to provide diversity and richness, ensuring the best source of nutrition for students.
To limit similar risks that may occur in the future, the school will temporarily stop using this type of fruit that is at risk. At the same time, the school will use peeled fruits for students to use. The dishes in the students' lunch are all prepared and cooked by the school staff, following 3 steps with strict standards.
The school has checked the remaining food in the students’ lunch that day. The pan-fried salmon was cooked at a high temperature, so the possibility of larvae appearing is unlikely.
The school has invited the Ho Chi Minh City Food Safety Department and the local police to investigate and will have a conclusion on the incident. The school will also send an email to parents to specifically inform them about the incident in the lunch meals of the 7/6 grade students.
